Wallstreet won't mount modules

I bought this used a year ago- went up to 9.2.1 and put in more RAm- jammed the keyboard in doing so and had to take it to an Apple store-- they replaced the keyboard and said new drivers were needed and located them for me--after they were installed worked. Two weeks ago the WS died- totally- took me this long (I am a bit slow) to figure out it was the power adapter--and the battery had long since died. It will now boot up and the battery is re-charging- but none of the modules will mount--I put one in (I have the VST -Zip 100, Super disk, and CD modules- none will mount)-- I made sure that the drivers that were put in a year ago were kept intact and they are still there, but...nothing. I keep them (also) on the desktop and re-installed even though I could see they were installed. I am stuck with no way to communicate with the laptop--any suggestions. Remember I am a bit slow, so really dumb down any replies-- thanks!!

sfanartist,

Since the Wallstreet lost all power for a couple of weeks, it is possible the PRAM became corrupted. I would first reset the PRAM, then see if a CD will mount on the desktop. Also remember none of the media bay modules will display an icon on the desktop unless a CD or Zip module is in the drive and mounted.

Here are the instructions for a PRAM-reset; please be sure to continue holding the four keys until you hear two startup chimes...it can take a while on the Wallstreet.

Thanks for the suggestion- will try that reight now. Wanted to let you know I tried every possible combination and premutation before saying nothing would mount-- tried inserting the empty module and then inserting a disc...and tried instering the module with the disc already inside---in no case did ANYTHING show up on the deskto--- no icon. then- I could not get the disc out and even the opened paperclip did not work...until I h ad someone else try it and felt REALLY stupid when it popped right out. At least I know WHAT to do even if I could not make it happen. I am steering away from the floppy and the cd- but sticking with the zip disc that is sturdier in case I really mess things up. thhanks about the PRAM info- I'll give it a try. Seems a bit of a conicidence that I remember this was a problem when i went up to 9.2 and had to have the Apple stopre.... back to the same spot... Again, thanks- will try it in a few minutes.

sfanartist,

If you are sure you are running OS 9.2.1, follow these steps to correct a conflict 9.2.1 has with the Iomega extension:

1. Go to the Apple menu > Control Panels > Extensions Manager and make sure the Iomega "FindIt" is disabled/unchecked. Also check that the "Iomega/VST Zip100 extension" is enabled/checked. Now close the Extensions Manager.

2. Next go to the HD icon > System Folder > Extensions folder. The Iomega/VST Zip100 extension should be at the top of the list. If not, add a space to the front of the name...this will force the extension to load first and avoid the conflict. Close all windows and restart to make the changes active.

If you update to 9.2.2, this conflict is corrected and you can remove the space from the front of the name of the extension. However, Iomega's "FindIt" still causes problems...I would just drag it to the Trash.

Hi all- here is the status. Not solved, but making progress!

I tried resetting the PRAM (thanks for the explicit directions- easy)- and both the cd and floppy modules mount and run. However, the zip disk module still will not. The zip disk is what i was using 100% of the time- and it is used--so I am going to gamble tht it is a coincidence that it died at this point and replace it. In the meantime, I copied some letterheads 9with designs) onto a floppy and am typing to that-- then trotting the floppy over to the tower and printing--back in business.

I checked the OS--while the installation disc I used says 9.2.1, when I boot up and ask- it says 9.2.2-- so I guess I was wrong!! I will locate the FindIt --if I can and trash it. right this minute I am annoyed at continually getting the register screen for Iomega. That is a change- I only got that once years ago when I originally got the zip drive for the tower--so I registered and that was it-- now with the reinstall of the drivers- I keep getting it over and over and.... But hey- this is progress --at least it boots and I can type! thanks all- if the "new" zipdisk module STILL will not mount and run (I'll let you know)- I guess it is time to quit/settle for the floppy.take it to an Apple store--we'll see.

thanks

Nope--nothing fancy only dialup (cannot get DSL- not close enough to a hub--cannot get FiOS since they admitted that when you get it they actually cut copper- meaning that when electricity goes out--no phone and my business needds that capability---only left with cable, or satellite--both of which are too expensive and other problems)---so, cannot set up a nice mini-network--determined that when I first bought the laptop--somehow thinking it was going to magically be able to talk to the desktop. Live and learn (slowly, but I do learn)--I am now just waiting for the replacement zipdisk module to arrive and see if I am bck to where I was before Christmas. Thanks all

"when electricity goes out--no phone and my business needds that capability---"

I had FIOS Internet installed, and it has been rock-solid. The battery-pack they installed claims, in case of a power failure, to provide Voice over the FIOS connection (but no Internet) for up to 8 hours.

I started with two copper lines into my home, and ordered FIOS. I requested that the second line be left copper since my home alarm is on it. That is the way the order went through. I had a little trouble managing the install to keep it that way, but there was no squawking from my carrier about ordering it that way, and no insurmountable problems getting it hooked up that way. So I have one line over FIOS and one line over copper. As you well know, the huge batteries they keep in the Telephone Central Office should operate an old-fashioned desk phone for days.

"... so, cannot set up a nice mini-network"

Yes, you can. The advantage of already having Broadband Ethernet is that you have seen the Control Panels and touched the cables, and may own a router or switch already. Otherwise you will have to learn a few more new things that you may not have seen before.

You can plug in a five dollar Ethernet cable and turn on file sharing and printer sharing even if you don't have Broadband Internet access. You just have to give each Mac an IP Address Manually. It's a little more complicated, but not difficult.
