New Mac Pro (Early 2008): Tiger bootable?

Two possible means of installing 10.4.x. First a restore disc from the very last batch of MP2,1 ( 8X ) second. retail OS X server 10.4.8. retail OS X 10.4 client froze at 10.4.6 first mac pro required 10.4.7.

They have a build that is later than 10.5.1. So no.

Try the Apple Store Specials or ask for 2007 model.

I think June/Sept will be nice and of course the next cpu from Intel will be true quad cores but not until a year from now. By which time OS X and 3rd party ought to "catch up" to hardware and OS.

Solution: Find 20 people who JUST got the 1-st Gen Mac Pro's with the spec's you want and buy them from those people. 🙂

It might, possibly, be able to boot Tiger - but it might be a bit tricky to get Tiger to install on one.

Why is that we can boot from XP which is now about 6 years old and we can't boot from Tiger? Wouldn't be so bad is we could at least run an older version of OS X in Parallels or Fusion, but even that is not an option.

I have the same probleme, i 've to purchase avid media composer which only runs on 10.4.11. So if someone who has one of this new MP can try and confirm if it's possible or not to install Tiger on it, it would be really nice...

Can someone who has this new Mac Pro try to install tiger on it to see if it works ? Thanks, i really need to figure this out before i put an order...

I recently tried to install Tiger on a new Mac Pro. I tried from a older Mac Pro install disk, which had 10.4.7 on it, and I also tried a store-bought copy, which is older. Neither worked. 😟

I also wanted to run Tiger on the new Mac Pros, so I called Apple support 3 times. Each time the support person had to put me on hold to verify the answer and all 3 times I was told that Tiger will NOT run on the 2008 Mac Pros. It looks like they did something in the bios to prevent booting or loading Tiger.

This really irks me because some of the software I'm using is not leopard compatible and I only have enough money budgeted to replace my aging Dual 867 hardware.

Oh well, Apple just lost a sale.

That is usually what happens when there is a revision.
When the 8-core came out it run 10.4.9+.

Until someone can confirm, older Mac Pros have EFI 1.2 and Apple moved to UEFI 2.01.

It might, or it might be unstable.

I would point to Apple Store Specials for last year's models which will run Tiger.

Retail Tiger version can not be installed onto any Intel-based Mac. For PPC only, says so right on the outside of the box.

Well, to confuse the issue a little further, I just spoke to two separate Apple reps over the phone (via two separate phone calls).

The first guy, Tech Support, told me that YES you CAN run Tiger, and even Panther on the new Mac Pro's.

I wasn't fully convinced after talking to the first guy, so I called back and talked to a guy in Sales, rather than another Tech Support person, and I pushed a little harder: "I just want to confirm before I buy, because I've heard conflicting reports that it will or will not run, due to the upgraded hardware of the new Mac Pro."

So the second guy put me on hold to confirm with one of their "System Engineers."

I held for about 5 minutes and he came back and told me: "No. The Mac Pro's are explicitly for 10.5 Leopard ONLY."

So, I'm pretty much convinced.

Maybe someone will buy one and try to put Tiger on a second interal drive.
