iPod Freezing CONSTANTLY, PLEASE HELP!!!

My iPod has been randomly freezing for about two months now. It'll usually freeze up during the first track I play when I turn it on. The screen freezes, I cannot change the volume or tracks or turn off the iPod. It will continue playing the track but will not play anything after that. All I can do is reset it. My iPod is up to date and so is iTunes.

I've restored my iPod three times and it still freezes up. Sometimes it'll freeze up the second I start playing a song, but most of the time when it's a few minutes into the song. Although after one time I restored it, it worked fine for a day, and then the second I started playing a podcast, it froze up. I restored it, and didn't add any podcasts to the iPod, thinking the podcast files could have been doing it, but that didn't work either.

Just what the heck is my iPod doing?

Crap! My iPod isn't fixed at all! I was able to listen to it flawlessly for two hours today, then the second I changed to a different artist, it decides to revert to its old ways and freeze up! WTH?!

Not that anyone here cares because no one will even reply to this, because apparently this problem has never occurred before and is impossible to solve.</sarcasm>

Im having the same issue, when i watch movies it works flawlessly as soon as i switch to music bam it freezes up. After searching the net & following the MANY tutorials, how to's etc i've had no success either. Ive restored & formatted my ipod in both pc & mac, but still no luck. I've even ran the diagnostic tools (countless times) on the ipod with the no errors. this doesnt help much but you know your not alone.

the one thing suggested that i have not been able to do is downgrade the firmware to a version that worked with no issue.

As I've read your post, it reminds me of one that I read in the past that had to do with a problem in the music library. It is possible that one (or more) of the songs in your library have become corrupt, and with that, it has caused the issue with the iPod freezing. Can you tell if it is the same artist that is causing the problem? Do you have your library backed up so it can be restored if you delete it? If you do, you may want to create a new library, an empty one, and just add a song or two and see if the iPod will sync to that and work. If so, try adding songs/artists incrementally, sync and test the iPod to see if you can narrow down where the problem occurred.
Hope this helps.

Well, I don't sync my music, it's stored on two different computers at two different houses... I'll try deleting songs from the iPod that I don't listen to... But it doesn't always freeze up on a certain artist. It'll do it randomly on any song, sometimes a song won't even be playing.

Right now, it's just the Apple logo frozen on the screen. Resetting makes it go back to the Apple logo, to which it just freezes up again. When I reset, I can hear the hard drive clicking inside...

I have practically the exact same problem. I can't find specific music that this happens too...although, it was more common among the music that I bought from the iTunes store. I removed the artwork from it, and since then it's been freezing less frequently, but it still does a lot. Also, it will freeze while I'm switching songs, but only for about a minute. Sometimes, though, it will freeze for longer, and tell me that I have a near dead battery, even if it is fully charged. I'll reset it and it'll be okay....but only temporarily.

Yeah I'm hearing you all loud and clear. My iPod 5th Gen has been freezing for over a year now and I have almost given up on it. I recently took it to an Apple store where they performed a diagnostic scan which showed everything was OK...hmmm! I've actually not tried it since as I will shortly be buying an iMac so I want to wait till I do before trying anything which might mess it up. My main issues have been that certain songs or even entire albums by certain artists freeze whenever they are selected. Resetting the iPod means it unfreezes and if I am careful I can find an artist that it likes to play! However, it seems to be over 50% of my tunes that it will freeze on and I can't tell which ones will work and which won't. I am aware that this may be a corruption issue with my music files but playing them through iTunes is fine, therefore I can't understand why they would suddenly be corrupt on my iPod. I have also tried removing the artwork as a few times I have tried to sync the iPod after having restored it (must have restored it over 20 times!) it mentions a corrupt 'artwork' folder. I think the thing to do (if I had the time) would be to select 20 or so tunes to sync at a time then make sure they can be listened to without freezing on the iPod which is going to take forever but it might determine which files are corrupt and which are safe. The only other alternative is to upload all my CD's again and redownload all the downloads (which again will take a **** of a long time) but it saves buying a new iPod...which of course the helpful Apple employee suggested I do!

Actually there have been more errors and funny quirks that have happened to me but I'd be writing forever if I explained them all. If you want you can contact me directly and i'll let you know what I have experienced.

This probably hasn't helped anyone a whole lot but at least you know that there is one more 'frozen iPod' out there!

Good luck all.
