Help re-mapping primary iTunes folder off startup disk

I seem to be having difficulty getting iTunes (latest version, running on 10.4.11) to re-locate the library to a firewire drive. After doing this in the preferences, it seems to be insisting on reverting back to downloading to my startup drive in the iTunes folder there, not the one I re-created on the firewire backup drive. Trouble is, it's always getting full as I download more content from iTunes, so I need it to behave and download the new content to my firewire drive, as instructed by setting the path in preferences/advanced. Any tricks?
