vertical cyan line on my 17" iMac display

2 months after my warranty expired, a cyan vertical line that is 1 pixal in width is on my iMac. Whats up with that? Is the monitor about to die on me after 14 months?

iMac Intel, Mac OS X (10.5)

Is there any way Leopard could have been responsible for this? I did not have the vertical line problem at all and literally showed up right when I restarted for the Leopard install. I have hooked an external monitor and its fine. No lines. It looks like a hardware issue. But its seems like too much of coincidence that it appeared during my Leopard install.

A friend with a Mac just emailed me he has vertical lines on the monitor.

I find this interesting because last summer, I was using a Dell Inspiron 9300 at work, and...lo, and behold,...a cyan line 1 pixel wide appeared suddenly on the monitor. I restarted the computer and...now had a cyan AND a magenta line. Thinking to myself...'That ain't right',, I googled 'vertical lines inspiron 9300' and got several hits regarding this problem in chatrooms & forums dating back to 2005. All the units in question seemed to have just gone out of warranty or were 18-24 months old. There was a lot of complaining that Dell was not acknowledging this problem & users were being told they would have to pay for a replacement screen. As I read through them, it occurred to me that the UK seemed to be the hub of the problem. The posts ran to spring of 2007 where someone posted a website for Dell wherein they finally admitted the problem (laptops were manufactured in Ireland; the faulty components came from Asia)
[see http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/04/23/dellverticallines/
Anyway, in June 2007, I contacted Dell support through their website (now there were 8 lines, in many pretty colors) and communicated with a very helpful fellow (somewhere in India judging by his name) who gathered info re: my line problem & within 10 minutes arranged to have a service tech come out to replace the screen AT NO CHARGE. In 7 days' time, the problem was fixed.

I personally prefer Mac; I sure hope they respond to this problem as well. It seemed Dell dragged their heels until all the yelling & screaming made them sit up & take notice.

Good luck to you all.

I got my first yellow line on the left side of my 20" iMac display yesterday, it was running fine for most of the day, then suddenly this line appeared!

I bought the computer 15.02.07, which makes it 13 months old (to me) one month over its warranty.

I like others did not bother to take out the Applecare policy as you don't expect something that expensive to start malfunctioning at 13 months old.

I have done nothing but sing apples praises since I got it - even vowing I would never return to a PC.

I'm gutted - this is seriously going to affect my new business as I can't afford to repair or replace at such an early stage - but I also need to see the images I am editing!!!

I shall be putting a response on the apple feedback site, and also get in touch with my local apple store, if I get no joy, I will be in touch with Watchdog at the BBC, see what they can do for us!!

Rant over! Sorry

I've just had this problem - a band of multicoloured lines running from top to bottom of the screen toward the right hand side of the display. Started with one or two lines then grew to a band an inch or so thick. Had not much help from Apple and I'm out of warranty.

Anyway I may have a solution - I've zapped the p ram, removed the remote control from where it was hanging on the right hand side of my iMac and recalibrated the display's colour profile (to 2.2 TV gamma/native white point) - and the lines have gone. Dunno which of these measures did the trick (or if any of them did) but it seems to have worked for me...

I’m having a same issue too , my imac 17” (SN W86490T3XXX) is having vertical cyan/white line and it’s 5 months out of warranty , I brought it down to Apple Service Centre and immediately they recognized it as display issue without looking at it further and acknowledged it as frequent issue for this type of iMac

I called Apple Customer Service (case 9926 44XX) the response is good and attentive but they failed to acknowledge this is inherit Mac issue and nothing common in their database

But when I saw this discussion topic and all internet mac forum, I realized whole bunch of peoples are having the same issue and nobody take care of it

I’m wondering what kind of quality of iMac computer is ? do they have QA in the first place ? I’m using various kind of PC or computer but none of them failed so easily
Some more it cost me about 40% of new iMac to repair

Currently I’m waiting for Apple Customer service for my appeal status , hopefully they will cover all my repair cost this round

I have high expectation with Apple and this is the first time I has it and hope they don’t crush my expectation easily

I also started getting black and coloured lines on my screen, then more serious display issues and many freezes. Today I think I have traced my problem. While all fans were running at default speeds I noticed that my PSU temperature was 85degs which seemed way high (using iStat widget). After trolling various support boards I downloaded smcFanControl2 and increased my fan speeds (I am using 1500/2500/2000) - within ten minutes my PSU temperature is down to 59degs, all lines have gone, the screen is way cooler, and so far no freezes.

Hope this may help some people.....
