What is Phonetic Name and Phoenetic Surname?

These are fields that you can add to a contact while you edit a contact on iphone.

Anyone know what it does, and how it works?

thanks in advance

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.

This is a second name field that allows you to spell a name as it sounds (which should be easier to remember) rather than how it should be spelt. This is especially useful when entering contacts from countries that use different alphabets.

thank you for that, at first i thought it used for something like a voice command (you call the name you entered in phoenetic and it calls the assigned contact)

For future readers, i also found out that if you enter Name, Surname, and Phoenetic Name, then the sorting criteria is the name!

example:

Surname: Doe
Name: John
Phoenetic Name: Jon
Sorting method: +Surname, Name+

Result: Contact appears under "J" when it should appear under "D"

Changing phoenetic name to something else, makes it the primary sorting criteria ex. Phoenetic Name: Chon, then +John Doe+ appears as +Doe, John+ under "C"!!!
