Macbook and external Monitor Samsung Syncmaster 920N (4real xperts)

Hi guys
I was thinking about connecting my macbook to an external monitor the Samsung 920N which is a 19 inch screen with just a VGA connector.
I heard that's not really that easy to do that, lots of troubles concerning the resolution and the fact that if you keep the laptop open and for example you want to use the isight you can not put ur laptop in the stop mode butI guess you will have to use the "share/extend desktop" mode.
I have a lot of doubts here I'm gonna try to sum it up and ask just a few questions:

1)I do have a the early version of the macbook, so the model that has the Intel Graphics accelerator (GMA) 950 64 mb ddr2 shared with main memory ecc.
Do you guys think that with this machine I would be able to connect the laptop to that Samsung Syncmaster 920N or is it too old and the result would be very poor?
I do not pretend to run games etc, just would like to surf some, use skype, msn and that kind of stuff.

2)What would be the best way to connect the two machines?
I heard that some people reccomend to use the mine dvi to vgs cable that they sell on the apple website. Some other people say that it's better to use a sort of converter from mini dvi to regular dvi and then dvi to vga cable....kind of puzzled about all this.

3) The macbook has only 1 gig of ram, i thought that maybe I could have added another gig of ram...just to make things run a bit smother when I'm using the external display. Do you think that would help?

4) I also heard that there are some devices called dvi splitters..i tried to read around and it seems like that maybe with a small tool like that it would be possible to "improve" to some extent the power of the video card plugged in my macbook and make it possible to have some better resolution on the samsung.... but this is just a thought.

Looking fwd to hear some advices about thi. Thanx in advance.

Tony

Yes it should work fine. I have a SyncMaster 940BW and mine looks great using either the VGA or the dvi. Yours should work fine for vga. It will look best using it as an extended desktop instead of mirroring

Your best bet is to use the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter. No need for the cable mess you would end up with using the dvi cables or adapter. They would not improve anything. Keep it simple.

More Ram always helps. I agree you would be better running more RAM with an external monitor.

I do not think you need this and am not sure even what it is. Sounds more like a device to enable two external monitors.

The MacBook Core Duo with a GMA 950 graphics chipset works fine with an external monitor. I have the first generation Macbook and it runs a digital or VGA monitor fine. I prefer the digital as it is super clear. VGA isn't bad it's just I like the digital look better. Nice thing with the SyncMaster is you just plug it in and it works.

Thank you very much! In the end i bought the cable and things worked out fine.
I thought the resolution would have abeen a bit better, but I guess I can not be too picky with a video card that has only 64 mbs. Plus the external display is a 19 inch screen (4:3)...so when I try to use the highest resolution, I do get two black bands up and above the desktop.

But it's fine, I took a few measurements and what i see on the xternal screen is still bigger than what i get to se eon the macbook so nothing to complain about.
Things with the new generation of macbooks might work muc better though.

Thanx again for ur suggestions, have a good day!

cheers
Tony
