MacBook Pro won't "wake" up after sleep mode!

On a MacBook Pro 15" 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 10.5.1:

Sometimes, after my MacBook goes to sleep, it will not wake up! I press every single key and tried closing and reopening the MacBook but the screen remains black. However the indicator light that pulstates while it is in sleep mode does turn off after the first attempt at trying to wake it up. After that if i close the MacBook again the light will not pulsate. I always end up having to manually shut down my MacBook and boot again. Has anybody else had this problem? It only occurs once in a while but is very annoying. Any ideas?

I too am experiencing this problem. I believe it is likely a hardware bug. When this issue last occurred, and people check your terminals to see if you get my results as well, I got the following message as part of the console output:

31/12/08 1:29:20 PM kernel Wake reason = EHC1 EHC2 UHC4

This implies (I believe) that my computer was woken up due to USB device access (I had a similar issue under 10.5.5 where the output was "USB Wakeup" or something like that). At the time of wake, there was no USB device attached to the computer. I have notified Apple of this bug; hopefully they will do something about it. If you would like to quote my bug id, the number is 6131532. Unfortunately, when I reported the bug under 10.5.4 (yes, this bug is *that old*), Apple prematurely closed the issue, but I asked them to reopen it. We'll see if they oblige.

So basically, after ONE YEAR, there is NO FIX for this maddening issue. My 13" Macbook does not have this issue, yet my brand new and more expensive Macbook Pro does.

I have tried all sorts of suggestions PRAM resets, RAM swap (had 2G - replaced with 4G - same problem) I even downloaded and ran SmartSleep, again to no avail. Nothing works and my machine is completely up to date. (10.5.6 w/ latest firmware).

I keep reading about this all over the internet. One poor soul bought 40 machines for his office and a large number of them (didn't specify) exibited this behavior. Even the VP's new machine. Oops... Just Google this issue and you'll find no end to frustrate users dealign with this. I'm a newer convert to Apple - sucked in by the iPhone and exceptional marketing. I still love my 13" Macbook, but I must say that Apple has completely dropped the ball here. This is terrible for them to remain silent. If affected customers knew there was another fix coming, that would be ok, but pretending there isn't a problem is inexcusable.

Lately here, Apple's stock goes up/down according to the numbers on Steve Jobs' scale, and I truly wish him all the best in his quest for improved health, but ironicaly, it's THIS kind of issue combined with apathetic customer support that will destroy a great company's image. Ok - stepping off the soapbox...

C'mon Apple - just do the right thing and address this aggressively. You WILL absolutely lose business if it continues. Almost every new Macbook purchaser in the last month is experiencing some form of this. Many WILL return the machines. I am a breath away myself...

Check your console. Does it have the message I posted above? I just want to know if the issue I'm having is similar to the issues others are having; my computer has so far only done it once in about 2 weeks.

Apple doesn't have the time, patience, or people to read every post in every thread on every board on this forum. They probably have not read this one. If you want them to know, sign up for Apple Developer Program and send them something in the bug reporter (it's free to use the bug reporter).

Everyone here is going to want to look this article.

Apple is correcting the problem for free on laptops that are within a 2 year window from date of purchase. The article doesn't state it but my 2.6GHz 17" MBP is covered...I've confirmed this with Apple support. The issue is a known and documented fault with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor.

Two 13" white MacBooks (early 2008) have been having this happen recently as well. Hopefully Apple fixes this soon.

I get the same message: Wake reason = EHC1 EHC2 UHC4

Had this problem as well...but found it was related to my wireless mouse and keyboard. My batteries on the mouse died and suddenly the screen went black. Of course I didn't know the batteries had died so I tried all of the things mentioned in this post, to no avail. Restart, PRAM, sleep mode, etc...nothing. It is only when I tried plugging in a usb mouse and keyboard and restarted with these plugged in that the screen came back to life. Simple!

HA! you all are lucky at least restarting brings yours back some of the time. iv had mine for over a year and never had this problem till 2 days ago iv restarted the thing half a dozen times and still nothing the computer comes on i can do things with short cut keys and what not but the screen will not wake up. i know its not a problem with the screen because i hooked the thing up to an external monitor and it put it to sleep right when i plugged it in. iv been using macs since mac os 7 came on disketts and this is the first time iv had any trouble like this.

@ Randy

Me Too! I've been quietly LMAO at Windows users since I started computing with OS 9. My first Mac, an iBook dual USB 500 MHz, was seemingly indestructible.

Seven Macs later, this MBP 2.4 17" has been a nightmare from the start. It is just not right, and I have Vista users laughing at me! And a lot of people that I convinced to use Macs over the years NOT laughing at me!

Now after a month of this narcoleptic state, I am ready to Frisbee the MBP through the Apple store window if they don't fix it for me. I have hard restarted it with success about three times out of about a couple hundred attempts. Mine just boots with a blank screen, even on a fresh standard instal.

The funniest successful restart was after I fresh installed to the MBP as a target disc. When I rebooted the "Doctor BlackBook" I had left the Firewire cable attached. After the Patient chimed to life with yet another blank screen I mindlessly yanked the firewire cable and Instantly the Screen Came Alive!

Another hilarious restart was the one I attempted tonight an hour after I bought my new unibody 15" on eBay. The MBP had been sitting idle for a couple days while I battled on with the wife's BlackBook and I thought I would give the old MBP a poke, the mongrel started perfectly...Go Figure.

I have been dealing with this problem for a long time, but I think I have the solution:

Reset the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
Once you put the battery back, press the power button and immediately hold down "cmd+s" to enter single user mode. ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492)

The computer will start up with a black screen with a bunch of text. Once it's loaded, follow the instructions to "Use fsck" found on this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417

After a couple days, so far so good...

MacBook Pro won't "wake" up after sleep mode!
