MacBook Pro won't "wake" up after sleep mode!

On a MacBook Pro 15" 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 10.5.1:

Sometimes, after my MacBook goes to sleep, it will not wake up! I press every single key and tried closing and reopening the MacBook but the screen remains black. However the indicator light that pulstates while it is in sleep mode does turn off after the first attempt at trying to wake it up. After that if i close the MacBook again the light will not pulsate. I always end up having to manually shut down my MacBook and boot again. Has anybody else had this problem? It only occurs once in a while but is very annoying. Any ideas?

I called Apple Phone Support yesterday about this. The guy I talked to did not acknowledge that it was a Leopard problem (though I am sure it is).

Anyway: he told me that sometimes Anti Virus software causes issues like this. I uninstalled my Sophos Antiviurs and I haven't had a problem since. We are however only talking about roughly 5 wakes from sleep since (so not exactly a big number of observations).

I will wait and see if it reappears.

Well in my case it sometimes comes back and someimes it doesn't... once I waited as much as 10 minutes before loosing patience and rebooting.

Anyway: As mentioned earlier, I have unistalled my antivirus software. Also I have unistalled a little tool to turn of the startup sound (I think that one is quite popular). Since then (5 days) I have only once had the waking problem. Before I did the uninstall it was far more frequent.

I talked to an employee in a local mac store. He told me that he had also had that problem but that it sudenly disappeared. He also said that he remebered deleting all startup entries. So possibly that's where the problem lies.

I somewhat doubt the safe sleep mode explanation... at least in my case:

My MBP has been stationary for the past three or four days. In particulat I have not moved it after I shut the lid. Still I have had that problem twice in about 6 days.

BTW: I installed a firmware update yesterday (auto-update). AFAIK that was only for MBP's from mid 2007, but still: Does anybody know if that is related to this issue at all?

Anybody got some news? I still have this problem. However, it doesn't happen as often as it used to initially.

My suspicion is that there are several causes for this problem. This would explain why there are solutions that work for some of us and not for others (e.g. unpluggin the mac before sleep, not moving the mac while going to sleep, usb devices etc.).

The annoying thing is not that it happens so often. The annoying thing (for me) is that I can never be certain about what happens when I take my Mac somewehre and open it up. It may work fine... or it may need a reboot, which takes time 😟

@Winterspring: I strongly suggest you go to a mac store and have them check this. I have run Tiger for quite a while on my MBP an I've never had simlilar problems. Therefore I think that you might have some hardware relate issue (especially if you've had that problem from the start).

In any case: It's unlikely that whatever causes the Leopard sleeping problem is also causing your problem, since for us (certainly for me) the problem started with Leopard.

@ Winterspring: I take it, your notebook is new. AFAIK you can take it to any "Apple Authorized Service Provider" (worldwide) to have them check it. If your NB draws its last breath before your back in the US, this way you'll at least have a plan B.

I don't expect 10.5.3 to fix this problem, since it's not mentioned in the list of fixed bugs. But still I wonder whether anybody has had problems since installing the update.

Me personally, I have stopped sending my MBP to sleep by closing the lid. Instead I send it to sleep manually (e.g. by using the menu option, or he power button). Haven't had a problem since. This is annoying though and so I am still wating for that "problem fixed" message.

On my macbook pro this is almost always the result of letting the computer sleep when the battery is very low. Once it tells me I am on reserve power, if I don't plug in before it sleeps, it does not want to wake up. My rule of thumb with laptops is that you don't let them sleep for long periods of time, unless they are plugged into power. That's just my experience.

I am having the same exact problem. Here is an excerpt from my system log when the freeze occurs.

At 1-31 11:00:07 I open the lid. About a minute later I have to do a hard restart because the desktop will not come up. The Caps Lock and Num Lock keys both respond to input, so I have no idea what is going on here.

After having this same sleep issue with my original 2006 Macbook I have done some looking around and am posting everything I have found so far. I have read trying a few things.

1. reset the SMC
2. install BatteryUpdate200701, MacBookMacBookProKbdSU, and MacBookSMCUpdate
3. uncheck "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep", in System Preferences/ Energy Saver/ Options/...
4. I have read about making script changes made in Terminal, but am hesitant to take this route, since I am not sure how it will effect future OS X updates

I did steps 1, 2 and 3. I will report back on their effects in a few days.

Side note. An unusual thing I have noticed when repairing disk permissions using the Disk Utility software is getting the same errors every time. I found a page on the Apple website concerning this here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306925. Apple writes: "You can safely ignore these messages. They are accurate but not a cause for concern." huh...

I am hoping the next OS X update will help with the permissions and sleep issues.

MacBook Pro won't "wake" up after sleep mode!
