Last Access of File vs Last Opened

Is the file "Last Opened" time (as viewed in the finder Column View) the same as "Last Access" ( ls -lu ) in Terminal? If I view a file using the Finders "Cover Flow", the file's last access time is changed ( ls -lu ), however, the last opened time in Finder remains unchanged.

Sounds to me like you answered your own question

In English, what you describe makes perfect sense to me - reading the file info is an access but does NOT open the file -
