M-Audio and iMac problems

I am having problems using the M-Audio Firewire 410 and my iMac.

1. Whenever the computer is in sleep mode the M-Audio seems to be causing a "kernal panic" which causes OSX to quit unexpectedly . This morning, after I had tturned it on and off, iTunes, Mail and Logic froze while opening and could not be made to force quit. Each time I restarted, it happened. Finally, before I restarted it again, I unplugged the firewire cable and everything was OK.

2. When I haven't used it for a few hours the sound is very distorted and sounds like it is coming out of a metal pipe. I have to restart to fix it.

3. I constantly have to reset the control panel of the M-Audio because the sound disappears. Sometimes the reset doesn't work and it freezes the control panel. Force quit is unable to make it quit and I end up having to turn it off at the back and then turning it on again.

Has anybody else had these problems?

I have emailed M-Audio but they haven't replied after a week.

dude as a general rule M-audio is the worst company for driver support, and in your case its the same as my FastTrack Pro - NO support for sleep. Their drivers have been like this for years both on Mac and PC. I usually have to restart the driver or restart the module when I get that "very distorted and sounds like it is coming out of a metal pipe" thing.

"At present we only support Mac OS 10.4 upto 10.4.10" - perfect example of a company that puts hardware before software and then statistically can't figure out why so many customers return such a great product.

Here's my advise:

1. You should really think about upgrading your OSX to 10.4.11. Then try the 10.4.10 driver. If thats still the same then try the 10.4.4 driver. As an example, I've used the 10.4.5 driver in osx 10.4.9 on a recommendation from m-audio level 2 support over the phone. It seems they consider the 10.4.4 or 10.4.5 drivers as some kind of base line update.

2. Are you trying to keep an eye on your hydro bill? If not don't put your computer on sleep.

3. I find restarting the physical interface itself better than through the m-audio control panel (just remember if you have speakers connected to turn them off first).

Thanks.

1. I have 10.4.11 (when I change it in the OS pop-up menu, it keeps gong back to 10.4.4) and installed the 10.4.10 driver. I will see tomorrow how it goes.

2. I have changed the setting so my computer will not sleep.

3. I don't understand what you mean by physical interface? Do you mean the Firewire 410. I still haven't worked out what the knob called level controller does. When I turn it, it just lowers my volume to zero.

I'm using an M-Audio MobilePre USB interface and also have sleep issues. This only seems to affect me when using Logic though. I'll explain further.....

On clean boot everything works fine. If I put the computer to sleep for an hour or so, when I wake the machine, everything seems ok. iTunes, Quicktime, System Sounds (including the "Chirp" when hitting the volume control keys) all works normally. The problem is when I close Logic before sleep then launch upon wake. Once I launch Logic, I get no sound from whichever project is loaded into Logic. In addition, if I hit either of the volume keys, no "chirp". No system sounds at all. iTunes will sometimes render the audio through the speakers, however, the volume controls (both on keyboard and in System Prefs) have no effect on iTunes' output level. If I go into the Sounds System Pref and switch to the internal speakers, everything is fine except Logic, which still outputs no sound. The only way to remedy the situation is to reboot the computer. If I have the foresight to leave Logic running when I sleep the computer, so far the problem hasn't happened. Unfortunately, this isn't always possible.

I wish I'd read this forum before grabbing the M-Audio box. I may still be able to return it though. What's a good suggestion for at least a 2 in/out USB interface (roughly the same cost as the MobilePre USB)? Price is a major concern, unfortunately. Also, MIDI I/O would be helpful as well. I have an M-Audio 1x1 USB MIDI interface, but it'd be nice to have MIDI in the main I/O and open up a USB port.

BTW - I only have one Firewire400 port which is being used by my external drive, which holds all of my project files. I realize I can daisy chain FW devices, but would rather not put my I/O on the same bandwidth as my HDD. At some point I will be getting a FW800 drive, but it'll be a while.......

Hi! I have a lot of problems with M-audio 410 from a month ago, never before... (sorry for my bad bad english): not in sleep mode but everytime the sound desappears from the output (green leds) but in the control panel it works; the sound goes away for 4-5 seconds then it comes back for 6-7 seconds, then again and again and again, and sometimes it's distorted: when so, I have to restart the compu, but after 10 min the problem is there again... I tested M-audio in a PC, it worked well. It's two weeks I'm troubleing to work out this problem, even with a Mac technical support expert... Yesterday the M-audio itself turned off (blue led), and when turned on no sound at all. This happens on a Pro with Tiger 10.4.10, using Cubase, Reaktor, Kontakt, iTunes, even the system' sounds... everything! I tried M-audio on Mac Book Pro with Leopard, the problem is there also. I have installed the latest driver and firmware... oh, with no sound file working, often the M-audio sends some "tick tick"... then a "BANG"!!!

What can we do? Have we to buy Motu? What about?

I'm feeling very very sad, I can't work... Have any solution?

I just was on the phone with the italian M-audio importer: he said many people have this problem on PC, rare on Mac; the M-audio is near to break... I have to send him the M-audio, he'll try to reset it, but when I told him about the "tick tick BANG" he said "it's near to burn"...

He says that M-audio 410 works fine with OS 10.4.10 and often with 10.4.11; sometimes with 10.5.0 even that driver is not for 10.5.0: it does NOT work at all ("impossible!" he said) with 10.5.1 because the driver was not released till now (on my Mac Book Pro with 10.5.1 it works...)

...

I hope my comments will help someone, good luck!

I have just bought MOTU Ultralite to replace my Firewire 410. I have just installed it today and already I am having audio/MIDI synchronization problems. Using Logic Express 8 I keep getting the error message "Problem synchronizing audio and MIDI. When I am recording with a real instrument the sound disappears and then comes back and disappears again. I have looked at this

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304113

I checked the sample rate which is the same. Other things on the list I don't understand. I did as they suggested at the bottom and switched to Built in output and there was no problem. It happens in Garage Band also. That means to me that the problem is with the MOTU. I have downloaded the latest drivers etc. Any ideas? Or do I have to put that one in the bin with the M-Audio rubbish.

Patrick, can you write to me at my private email to tel me about the Ultralite and how well that is working for you with Logic Express? I would appreciate, if you had NO problems with it and a MacBook Pro, an all go for this product. MY FireBox died (again) and I have only been able to use it for about 20 das in a year and one month!!! I am seriously considering this to be my choice and want to order it soon. Thank you.
