Sony DRX-840U Multiformat DVD burner with Leopard?

Has anybody got the new Sony DRX-840U 20x, multiformat dvd burner to work with Mac OS X, leopard in particular? Here's the URL:

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=1055 1&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665200476

I could find no mention of Apple compatibility at all at the Sony web site. It's also USB only, but I can live without firewire (I think).

G4(FW800), Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Thanks to both for the helpful responses. I'm glad to be
reassured that the Sony drive (and presumably most others that
work with PC's) should work.

In the meantime I just got a TigerDirect.Com catalog, which
lists four multiformat (including dual layer), external derives.
The catalog isn't always clear about the model numbers, so the
following are taken from the web. I've omitted the Plextor
because there doesn't seem to be a model that's fast, external,
and supports LightScribe. That leaves the following, which
support dual layer and Lightscribe:

Lite-On DX-20A3H 20x USB
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=33430 76&body=MAIN#detailspecs
(can't find this at LiteOn the website)

Kanguru 20x (U2F-DVDRW-20LS) USB/Firewire
http://www.kanguru.com/dl16xu2fdvdrw.html

HP 20x dvd1040e USB
http://www.shopping.hp.com/store/product/product_detail/GJ293AA%2523ABA?

The HP got a couple of bad reviews here:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=31792 82

The Kanguru specs seem just what I want, but I saw a review of
an earlier model which mentioned a loud fan -- possibly that's
fixed now...

Any comments on any of these?

i have had a g4 powerbook for quite some time
i'm still running tiger on the g4

i recently purchased an imac with leopard installed
short and long of it

the sony drx-840u works with the old 10.4.11 powerbook great
but so far with 10.5.1 imac----

1. loading audio from cd, fine
2. burning back the same audio, a blank disc is not recognized
3. playing a movie, it wants to but dvd player ends up in no responce land
4. the drx-840u was originally plugged in to the imac 10.5.1 while it was off
when discovering problems i restarted it
before restarting it i looked for it in system profiler
it was not present after restart it was present
but the same problems still occurred

i'll do more
but there's not too many variables in that one works and one doesn't
so far i'm leaning towards 10.5.1 as the problem
any thoughts

I got one about two weeks ago. Purchased at Fry's Electronics in Plano, TX. Among the miles of shelves containing players. The 840U and one other Sony model were the only ones with a label "Mac Compatible". The label does specify 10.4 or higher.

I purchased the drive for the purpose of backing up older files in preparation for upgrading to 10.5. The drive performed flawlessly. Now I even have a few new disks for the car.

I completed the upgrade to 10.5.1 and the 840 has continued to perform flawlessly. It really is just plug it in and turn it on.

In comparison to other posts. I have not noticed any problems with 10.5 recognizing the drive. One of the reasons for this may be that I don't turn it off and on. It's plugged into the computer, turned on, and left on.

It has served my needs very well so far.

Okay, here's an update.

I went ahead and ordered the Kanguru 20x FW/USB drive, and by
now have tried a few things.

First of all, I was impressed at the responsiveness of their
sales staff to an email question about whether I could return
the drive if I found it too noisy. (Their policy requires that I
pay return shipping.)

The shipping cost was a steep $14, but it arrived promptly via
UPS ground within 3 working days (I ordered on Friday before MLK
day, and it arrived on Wednesday, as they predicted). The total
was $98.98, including shipping.

The drive was advertised to require no drivers, so I was
disconcerted when the firewire connection, using the included
chintzy-looking cable, simply wasn't recognized. I messed
around with drivers on the included CD's, which had
distressingly old software, including versions for OS 9. I
installed the included Dragon Burn software for OS X, to no
avail.

Then I tried USB, with the included cable, and the drive was
recognized.

Finally, I substituted a firewire cable known to work, and the
drive was recognized; so I concluded that their firewire cable
was defective, while their USB cable was not.

Next, I used Toast 8.0.3 to burn a CD. I use only name-brand
media, and I have plenty of hard drive space and RAM. It hung
at about the 90% stage of verification, but the disk seems ok.
Numerous problems with Toast 8.0.x and leopard are reported in
discussions at the Roxio website, including problems with
verification.

Then I tried to copy my leopard install disk onto a Sony 8x,
DVD+R DL disk, again with Toast. That claimed to go at about
5x, but claimed to fail on writing the final-output-whatever
stage. The result is nevertheless moutable and readable, but
not bootable. Then I tried using the DVD/CD master mode of Disk
Utility, reading from the Kanguru, to create an image, which
eventually failed with an input/ouput error. Same thing
happened on a repeat. Now I'm trying to do that again, reading
from the internal SuperDisk drive... It's going much, much
slower..., really, really slow..., and finally failed
(unfortunately I forgot to write down the reason).

Then I noticed that the install disk is DVD-ROM, so it doesn't
sound surprising there would be a problem with a literal copy to
DVD+R DL. If that's the case, neither Toast, nor maybe Apple's
Disk Utility, detects the incompatibility between source and
destination media.

The drive turns out not to be noisy, at least when it's not
burning, and the fan (I guess) is audible but not that noisy
even then.

So far I haven't tried the Lightscribe capability.

I've done a few other things, mostly reading, a little writing.
All in all, there has been no problem that couldn't be
attributed to Toast or improper choice of media or media not up
to spec. I'm keeping the drive, and hoping Roxio gets their act
together. I like it so far.

Hello,

I also am still running Tiger and am having problems with 840U. Is there software to download or do you just plug into the USB port and record somehow. I don't know if I lost the instructions but all I have that came in the box was a software CD and instructions on how to plug things in, which I could figure out on my own. I do have Sony blank DVDs. Can you help or anyone help? Thanks.

Where is the firmware update for the DRX-840U? Even the NEC version I have trashed 75% of my DVDs and have tried all brands suggested, I cant take it! this is an external DVD USB and FW, I used to burn with no prob over 250 dvds and never an error now my internal superdrive errors and external since Board Processors and heat sinks were replaced 2 time due to skunk smell! Yeah read about that one! My Mac Pro has been in the shop 3 times under applecare and now no burning even in 10.4.11! Using toast, DragonBurn, and Apple Disk Utility and its hit and miss! Oh yeh using DVD-R DVD+R DVD-DL Brands are Sony,Verbatum,Ridata, Maxell, and more. This is expensive and not very fun praying for a good Verification!
