Photo Import - Nikon D70

This has been happening for a while now and it's really annoying! Everytime I import photos from my D70 a dialogue box is displayed:

"ALERT The Photo DSC_00**.NEF could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."

You can click CANCEL or FIND PHOTO. Cancel moves the process onto the next image but FIND PHOTO does not do what you'd expect, even if you locate the image in the correct folder, it still will display the message for the next image import.

This happens for every picture!

I have looked at the settings on the camera and iPhoto but I can't seem to solve the issue. It happens with all file formats and I have formatted the card.

Many thanks

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Look in iPhoto's Advanced preferences to make sure the Copy Files to iPhoto Library colder when adding to library" is checked. If it's not then you've been running a referenced library and those photos are looking for the original files on the memory card. iPhoto creates an alias file pointing to the location of the file at the time of import which would be the camera's memory card.

User uploaded file

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

You may be out of luck with printing to a printer connected to a PC. Being a software engineer myself, I am inclined to think "A printer driver is a printer driver" and as long as your OS gives you the path to get to the real printer (I.e., SAMBA from your Mac to your PC), you should be able to print across platforms. *Not so!* Many printers (including the Canon photo printer hooked to my wife's PC) will not print cross platform. Go figure.

As a software engineer also it would seem to make sense to me...however SAMBA/CUPS/the GUI all see the printer fine (HP OFficejet 6110) but will it print...nope.

Changed workgroups, length of printer name (<15 chars) security levels everything. Pretty much bit the bullet now and going for a Network printer server solution. Bonus is the PC wont need to be on when I want to print.

I am currently in New Zealand on holiday and hoping to store my images on my ipod. Although slow, it worked fine once. Now however, when I connect the two devices using the Apple camera connector, my ipod shows 0 photos and my D70 reads "PC" on the screen... any ideas? Relevant info may be that I switched to shooting on "fine" resolution and am using a 1GB and 4GB cards...

Thanks,
Zane
