Your institution, like many .edu's are limiting access to the smtp server to just computers on their network. Your iPhone is NOT on their network. The easiest workaround is to set your imap (incoming) settings to your school's settings (imap.schoolname.edu) and use gmail or some such as your outgoing smtp server.

You have to ask the IT people at your school what the proper settings for the outgoing SMTP server for your school's mail system are. It's entirely a configuration problem that nobody here (unless those that attend MSU) can help you with.
You need to make sure your SMTP server settings are correct. i.e., Do you need a username/pass to send from your SMTP server? Does the SMTP server use SSL? Which port does it communicate on?
Ask the IT guys.

I would assume that your iphone is the same as anyone with a laptop at the school-- When I take my macbook pro to any of the 3 universities I attend I have the same problem. My email never works at the schools, but my .MAC email will (I guess because it is web based or something)
I'll watch this thread to see what happens, and would be happy if I.T. could help me too.
I have an "@mac.com" email. Is it possible to get it to work at these schools? I had just given up, now I sense a glimmer of hope.
Help me apple people, you're my only hope.

You might also ask one of the geeks over in EE or IT who has an iPhone. I guarantee you they have figured it out.

If you find that you can send emails when you are connected to the campus Wi-Fi, but not when you are connected to EDGE, that is the reason. If that is the case, take vangoghsear 's suggestion and set up a GMAIL or other account to use for outgoing mail.
Mfoster - If your MAC (Wi-Fi) works but your iPhone (EDGE) doesn't that is probably the reason. You could try connecting the iPhone to the campus Wi-Fi.

Spartandawg,
May I ask how you solved it? I'm in the same situation as you(at MSU) and want to set up my msu email. I dont want to go the gmail route, but if its the way you did it, I might have to do it too.
Thanks
