how to only show directory size with "du"

I usually use the following:
du -h myfolder | tail -n1

I tried "du -ks" but it gives me size followed with the directory.

Is this what you want?

du -ks | cut -f1

I'm not sure if I understood what you want correctly...

du -h -d 1

-h puts it into "human-readable" sizes, and -d N specifies the depth of recursion, so if you just want the size of directories at the point in the filesystem where you issue the command, this will give it to you.
