My Mac only sees wireless signal from "D-Link" router in very limited range

Hi. I am a writer working with a new writing partner. He has both a PC laptop and a new Apple iBook, both of which he uses in his home office. The office is very far from his router - which is a D-Link wireless router creating what he describes as a long range "N" network. He has no trouble picking up a strong wireless signal when we are in the office, on either his Mac or his PC. I don't get any service at all unless I am very close (i.e. virtually in the same room) with the router. My computer is 3.5 years old, and I'm wondering if that's the problem.

Here is the Airport Card Information for my computer:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x4E)
Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.25.8)

Do I need to update my Firmware? Buy a newer AirPort card? Advice, anyone?
Thanks,
liz
