iPhone stuck in "headphones" mode

This issue is not hardware based. There is no logic behind freezer vs sucking it. This issue is a software bug that apple has addressed in the newest updates. It has never been hardware based or due to lint etc. It has always been a firmware issue.

I took mine 5 to the Apple they just gave me a new one. They have a 1 yr warranty they said, but you have to take it to an Apple store. I haven't had any problems since except for crappy wifi connection and people complaining that they can't hear me well.

Last night I spilled the glass of water next to my bed onto my iPhone 5. I immediately removed it but some water must have got into the headphone socket - the phone still worked OK but was stuck in 'headphones' mode.

I applied low heat from a hairdryer - no luck, then did a hard reset with no effect.

Searched this forum for further tips and decided to do a restore in the morning - this still didn't help so I did all the socket drying / sucking / blowing techniques, jiggled a headphone jack, used cotton wool on a toothpick, etc. Nothing helped.

On the way to work I put the phone on the dashboard of the car as it was a sunny day and hoped that more drying out might help - parked while I went into the post office - and when I came out 10 minutes later it was working OK.

Not sure what the exact fix was but thanks for all the advice and tips in this thread !

Can't really add anything to the problem, but FYI: -

Discovered the problem yesterday evening after calling my wife on her mobile. She could hear me but no amount of her responses/shouting came through to my end. Got home and after phaffing about saw that the volume control showed 'Ringer, Headphones'. Sound only came out when a call came through but none of the other alert sounds worked. Tried all the different suggestions in this forum, i.e. various jacks in an out umpteen times, twisting jack, blowing through straw, pausing music in play mode and removing jack etc, etc! Sound only came through when buds inserted.

Gave up in disgust and put phone to one side to try and sort out today. However, this morning everything was back to normal - so can only guess that one of the various attempts worked and the software cleared itself overnight.

By the way, wife has never put anything in the jack and keeps phone in leather case (not in pocket), so lint would not have been a possible cause. Phone just got its knickers in a twist all by itself. Never knew this could happen so waiting for mine to play up now!!

From the previous 28 pages of this forum this problem seems to have been around since 2008 and Apple seem to blithely ignore it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Forgot ipad 2 3g on car roof, started washing it, ipad got its part of cleaning. Stuck on headphones. Depression. Panic. Rejection. Finally, airplane mode, wait 5 secs, then aquick suck and blow in thejack and back to normal mode. Its working, yay. Note it laid in the car over night, mostly surface moist drying away.

I Myself I had water exposed to my iPad headphone jack, I followed the suck in headphone jack method and then held my ipad in front of a portable blow/fan heater for 10-15 so that the iPad would not break and then pressed the volume button up and voila it worked, volume now appears instead of headphones pop-up.

HHad the had the same problem last night with iPhone 6 in otter box. Had not used headphones recently. Decided it was software. Deleted last app I had loaded yesterday. "TV GUIDE". That fixed problem.

I Dropped my phone in the snow and I think some moisture got into my headphone jack, so I read about it and tried alarms, headphone input, resetting nothing worked and i also read that if moisture was involved then waiting over night it may evaporate. So, I sped up the process by showering and closing the door and not turning on the exhaust fan while my phone was the bathroom with me and as soon as I got out, it was back to normal and the ringer volume was activated again! Thanks for all the feedback. Thought I'd lend a helping hand with what helped me. Good luck!

Okay, this is going to sound weird and dumb, BUT THIS WORKS! I tried everything with my phone I used the Q-tip, I sucked on it, blew air into it, I mean everything. Then I stuck it in the freezer for 10 minutes to the dot and it worked the second it came out. I don't know why this works but just give it a shot if nothing else is working... What do you have to lose?

My phone fell to the toilet, so there was a lot of water involved. I tried everything (qtip, blow drying, toothpick, calling from another phone, you name it) but I finally tried sucking the jack as hard as I could and it was instantly fixed.

I dropped my iPhone 6s+ to water and stuck with “headphone mode” for couple weeks. I tried many ways to take it back such as rice, silica, q-tip, cleaned or suck jack, blower, adjust volume, restart with conditions...

Now it’s back, by put it to the freezer for 10 mins (shutdown and wrapped by plastic bag first), and then turn it on.

Hairdryer worked fine and immediatelly for my sons phone. He dropped his phone to snow.

Vacuum worked for me! Tried all other suggestions and didn't work.
