Okay so I totally freaked today when this happened to my phone and I couldn't figure out why. I will say that I blamed it on my two year old who seems to be a pro at changing settings in three seconds and then it taking me hours to figure out what he has done. After reading this post I remembered that this morning I spilled coffee in my car. I don't think any got on my phone but it is a possibility. I took an alcohol wipe and a bobby pin and cleaned out the headphone jack - and it worked! I know it doesn't sound that the best thing to do but the alcohol seemed to dry up what ever was in the headphone jack and fixed my problem. Hope this helps someone out there.
This happened to my phone today. I couldn't hear a fairly important call. I tried the various suggestions on here - bobby pin, plugging the headphones in and out, the hairdryer and using the bellows I clean my DSLR's sensor with. None of them worked. I live in Sydney, Australia and it's summer here so it wasn't the cold that made it freeze up on me. My husband was going to take it to the Apple store but this is what worked when all of the above didn't.
Finally, I sucked the socket and after doing this a few times, it worked.
I now have it working again and my phone has a big smile on its face.
A couple of people on here suggested sucking the headphone hole as hard as ****.....now this does sound rediculous, however it worked. After poking shaking and getting as mad as **** I tried it and sure enough the sound came back, now I am calm and big thanks to the the iPhone suckers
im sorry... i got the same problem here... can you guys give me any idea what i can do more.? My iphone4 sound stop working, i google it, i have clean the headphone port with alcohol and earbud, i have try plug n unplugged headphones so many times... i also have reset my setting (networking) followed the intruction from one web i read but still nothing happen.. :(
I would like to know why in all the 569273 Views and 381 Replies.... NO OFFICIAL APPLE RESPONSE HAS BEEN GIVEN TO THIS THREAD?! Needless to say, I am experiencing the same issue and from reading all of these posts, I'm inclined to believe that NOTHING really worked but time. That said...when you pay $500 for a freakin' phone, you want your sh** to work!
Solution: take out the headphones
Apple is not reading this forum. It's only from users to users.
If you take a tooth pick a wrap paper towel around it and then clean out your headphone jack it should work! (: Worked for me!
Not sure if this has been brought up in this forum yet or not, but I have a 4S, basically the problem is all the sounds work excpet when music is played. text message alerts, phone rings, all that is ok. But, when you go to the ipod, pandora, or another music playing app, none of the songs will play.
Have tried many of the suggestions here, restored, sucking on it, canned air, etc...but no luck. This problem sounds slightly different seeing how it does play sounds ok, just not music.
Thanks in advance.
I have an iPhone 5 16GB
This is what worked for me, I rolled up a tiny piece of newspaper, jiggled it in the jack port, and also sucked out the air for a second and sound was back. Perhaps try this two or three times gently before giving up
It is definitely a hardware issue, not a software issue, do not attempt most of the suggestions here, if it continues to happen I am going to the Apple store with it and I am not paying "jack" **** for it.
( sucking out the air worked as the sound came on as I was attempting this )
On second thought its just lint or debris in the port, a shot of air from a compressed air can I imagine would do the same thing
Have tried the compressed air. I think the only thin I haven't done is try the newspaper thing. Will give it a try. Only thing I don't get witht this problem is that the sound will work witheverything except listening to music from the ipod, pandora, etc... The alarms work, text tones, ringer, etc all work.
Ya, i'm no expert by any means, that is just what worked for me, I had no sound at all, other than my ringer working thankfully, but if it is acting glitchy or erratic like you describe, it could be something Apple should look at, a piece of newspaper can't hurt but I wouldn't mess around too much.
Do the newspaper thing, and then the compressed air.
I used an air can and blew directly into the headphone port and it worked.
