Q: iPhone stuck in "headphones" mode

Earlier I accidentally grabbed my iPod headphones instead of my iPhone headphones and I think I may have jammed them in there too far. Because now I can't hear any of the keyboard clicks or sounds and when I receive a text message there's no sound either. And when I receive a call it won't allow me to hear the person on the other line unless I put my headphones in or use the speaker function. And when I turn the ringer volume up/down it says "headphones" in parentheses as if it's been set to "headphones" mode or something! Is it possible that I jammed them in so far that my iPhone thinks my headphones are still plugged in? Did I just totally ruin my iPhone? What do I do? Anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks!

Well the freezer trick seems to be working for me. At home if I using the iPhone extensively it will automatically go into headphone mode, and 1 minute in the freezer will pop it right out.

FYI, I've replaced my battery, my headphone jack assembly and cable and the entire front screen assembly, which only leaves the mainboard as the problem. So, aparrently, the heat is coming off the main board and causing the issue.

Sucking on mine worked while nothing else did. Took a couple tries and it still goes back and forth sometimes. This is honestly the worst phone I've ever owned in terms of reliability...

When you say nothing else worked, how many other things did you try? Did you try a couple of minutes in the freezer, or cold to the back of the phone? If you say "nothing" you must enumerate those attempts, or you confuse some people and add no new info to this problem. You must also indicate which problem you have ---- does it spontaneously go to headphones mode, or does it stick in the mode after headphone use?

I searched for nearly 2 hours. I didn't have ear phones plugged in or headset. It just happened....

    here's the answer:
You need to stop the Ipod process somehow. Don't know how mine got stuck bc I didn't even have the ipod going.

How I did it - I have mine jailbroken and have the app SBSettings. In that app you can stop processes. Stop the ipod process. It immediately fixed it.

    Guys,

It would be very interesting if someone launched an app that could make the user capable to switch from headphone mode manually... does anybody know if it is possible?

i had the same problem, but nothing was working. Strange, but I opened an app like facebook and plugged in and out the headphones and it worked. Who knows, that may have had nothing to do with it, but my problem is solved. thought i should post it.

Thank you soooooooo much!! I had tried everything on here too and was getting so upset that it would be stuck like that forever! And then I tried your method of wiggling back and forth while taking out and it now works!!

You are a star!!! Thank you Hannaht!

I did everything but headphone stuck was persistent.
Then I deleted all third party applications from iphone. Now, it seems problem have gone.
I do not think it is heat issue, i believe it is firmware issue and most of the apps causing this problem

    Apple *****!
I'm a big ex fan of Apple, with more than 8 years purchasing all of their products, even living in Argentina. But for one year, with my 3G Iphone, I can't solve this malfunction hardware problem, and nobody like to help me...
In 8 years I never saw a company like Microsoft in my products, but actually I think they are the same. Customer LOSES ALL THE TIME!!!!!

OK, I've read the solutions, tried ALL of them, but my phone won't ring, it only vibrates. My earphones work fine. I just don't get any sound when the phone "rings." Irritated that my new favorite toy is letting me down.

    Same thing here.

I use my iPhone as and iPod nearly every day on my commute. Every now and then, after I pause the music and unplug the headset. The iPhone will still think it is inserted.

This has happened to my with my 1st gen iPhone, and also with my 3G iPhone.

Apple does not seem to fix this issue, or address it properly.

It has happened to me many times that I answered a phonecall, and realized that I could not hear the other side. Resulting in me looking like a complete fool with my iPhone, running around franticly to search my headset to plug it in out like a madmen.

I love my iPhone, but won't be buying a new one if this does not get fixed. Because of this I cannot TRUST my iPhone to be able to answer a call correctly.

Please Apple, let me keep my beloved iPhone

I had the same problem (may still have) but I have found a possible fix which seems to be sticking.. I have a custom ringtone from garage band. I noticed some time back that the only way out of the headphones mode was go into settings/sounds/ringtone and change to a standard tone. Headphones mode stopped right there. So i deleted all custom ringtones 3 days ago. And hey presto it seems to be sticking. Maybe even if you dont have a custom ringtone - try changing the ringtone and immediately hitting the volume switch. Bizarre but seems to work....

Very strange.. I waited till my Iphone heated up ( playing towermadness) checked the the ringer volume .. HEADPHONE then changed the ringtone. presto switched back to RINGER. IMHO this is a software issue...PLEASE APPLE READ THIS AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!! It is becoming a frustrating problem having to put urgent and important calls on loud speaker.

But it solve the problem for a while....
There is a MAINBOARD issue, so IPAD and IPHONE buyers THINK before getting trouble because APPLE doesn't SOLVE THE PROBLEMS!
