Q: iPhone stuck in "headphones" mode

Earlier I accidentally grabbed my iPod headphones instead of my iPhone headphones and I think I may have jammed them in there too far. Because now I can't hear any of the keyboard clicks or sounds and when I receive a text message there's no sound either. And when I receive a call it won't allow me to hear the person on the other line unless I put my headphones in or use the speaker function. And when I turn the ringer volume up/down it says "headphones" in parentheses as if it's been set to "headphones" mode or something! Is it possible that I jammed them in so far that my iPhone thinks my headphones are still plugged in? Did I just totally ruin my iPhone? What do I do? Anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks!

When this is a physical problem, then the above solutions work. When its a software, or Logic board issue, none of this works. The only way to tell is to try everything above, then actually replace the entire headphone jack flex assembly. If the problem still presents itself, the issue is one of many Apple knows about and has NO fix; ie. Auto focus, charge port, mic, incoming call speaker, etc..

If you havent figured it out yet, I'm a repair shop in business 20 years, and have fixed hundreds of iPhones. When there is nothing physically wrong(Liquid damage included) with a phone and these problems still present themselves, we call it an Apple Bomb. If youre lucky enough to get an Apple Bomb still under warranty, you'll get it replaced. If it's one day over a year, youre done. Apple has known about these problems for years and offers no fix.

I have a headphone problem now with a phone I changed the LCD assembly on. I have swapped the part out with a known working one, and it still does not work. Then I restored it, and it still thinks its in Headphone mode. Apple Bomb.

Yet next month 1 million Apple Nuts will be waiting for the next POS to come out...My repair business likes them though...thank you.

...and the beat goes on...Don't feel bad, youre not alone...Us "Old School" Cell guys just don't understand how this industry got so much away from performance and durability being paramount, to selling the look and sizzle. Its like buying a car, not caring about the engine, tranny, crash tests, etc; and only caring about the look and stereo inside...

So I can plug my apple headphones jack in. But the music plays through the speakers of my iphone. But I can still control the volume of the speakers and pause the song through the headphones. No sure how this can be. But is this something wrong with my phone or the headphones? Has anyone ever had this problem/situation before?

That actually does sound like a physical repair...or the headphones them selves. Try a different set of headphones. If the same thing still happens; have the earphone jack replaced. An "Old School" repair shop shouldnt charge more than 69.99-79.99(That's what I charge). Try to avoid the corporate repair shops and the ones in the mall; they all tend to not reassemble your phone correctly, and or, use cheap chinese knockoff parts.

My iphone5 is still under warranty. Do you think if I take it to the Apple store, they will fix it there?

Alright, I'm about to pull my hair out. Got the iPhone 5 august 28th, not even 3 weeks ago. And this headphone problem started happening about 2 days after, did the earplug thing and it went back normal for a few days. Then it did it again the next week, i used commpressed air to fix it for a good couple days. Then it went into headphone mode AGAIN, now when i used compressed air or haridryer, it will kick back in for about a minute but go back into headphone mode. I have literally tried every single techinque on here and many various google pages. Nothing has gotten it to permantly stay out of headphone mode. I need major help, what do I do??? Thanks

In my experience, the "Genius" people rarely fix anything. Although the one here seems to fix LCD/Digitizer assemblies now. Regarless, I would bring it back and get it swapped out; unless it's something they can prove you did wrong to it, it should not be a problem. Make sure you back it up first.

Bring it back and get it swapped out; make sure you back it up. It's frustrating, but be thankful youre not on your 366th day; you'd be SOL for sure...and stuck with another Apple Bomb.

I hate to state the obvious, but Didnt you say in your OP you just bought it August 28th? Bring it back to the Apple store you bought it from; or actually any Apple store. If you bought it used, I would bring it back to an Apple store anyways and tell them the Dealer you bought it from was out of state and now closed(A trick I've told my Customers for years)...It may still be in Warranty. If it's out of warranty, you'll need to take it to a repair shop like mine. Make sure theyre like what I described above.

Well, it's gonna cost ya then. The part obviously needs to be replaced. And if the Repair Shop you take it to doesnt know how to "Cover their tracks" as I call it, you'll be out of warranty for any future issues. If I were you, I would find the time to take it back.

Do not go on Youtube and think you can open that phone by yourself. Those phones have been opened before and are WAY easier than reality, AND, they do not show you all the steps.I cannot tell you how many people come into my shop every week on DIY phone repairs that have gone bad. It usually costs alot more too...or bricks your phone.

The problem went away today. Hopefully it does't occur again in the future. Or hopefully it happens, while my phone is still under warranty (60 days left).
