Q: iPhone stuck in "headphones" mode

Earlier I accidentally grabbed my iPod headphones instead of my iPhone headphones and I think I may have jammed them in there too far. Because now I can't hear any of the keyboard clicks or sounds and when I receive a text message there's no sound either. And when I receive a call it won't allow me to hear the person on the other line unless I put my headphones in or use the speaker function. And when I turn the ringer volume up/down it says "headphones" in parentheses as if it's been set to "headphones" mode or something! Is it possible that I jammed them in so far that my iPhone thinks my headphones are still plugged in? Did I just totally ruin my iPhone? What do I do? Anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks!

Just wanted to say "thank you" for the suggestion. I was taking pictures in the rain and thought that caused my phones sound to stop working. After trying several suggestions on how to fix it which didn't work, I saw your post and tried it and it worked!

    Much Peace~

    Hey Guys,

That is true that if water enters the headphone jack, the thing gets stuck. So the q-tip thing works. Fantastic.

    Thanks,

I tried the various suggestions. In the end a few quick blasts with the hair drier did the trick!

Ok this is not recommended at all but worked for me because i was just getting a little heated. (please only use this method if you have tried everything else) i literally just kinda started banging lightly on the headphone port with hammer. works fine now. really dont recommend doing it but yea

iphone 6 fix ( troubleshoot in order)

    - go to settings

    - click on sound

    - Make sure the "change with buttons" option is green

    - try turning this option on and off

    - also try raising and lowering the volume by using the volume button

    - also try cleaning the headphone jack with a q-tip

    - this should work

Some time it's just because dust, or tiny pieces of metal get stuck in the headphone plug , just get a can of compressed air and blow on the plug.

It is almost definitely not a software problem for most people.  I ran into this issue yesterday after doing yard work all day with the phone in my pocket.  I figured I had gotten sweat or other moisture in the jack.  I tried all methods except a full restore.  I tried cleaning with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol.  initially that method didn't work, but as I suspected it was fine the next morning.  If it's moisture, the alcohol likely helps it dry, though it can take a while.  I did get some dirt out of the jack, which may have also affected it.

Also for you, I would try  the cotton swab and alcohol method (you have to take some of the cotton off) and really cleaning it well.  If this and other methods don't work, go to the Apple Store.  If anything, you may have a defective phone.  Apple isn't getting away with anythng...defects and known issues just happen.

Similar issue, the q tip and sucking didn't work, but set the alarm for one minutes time and it got everything working again. Almost like the phone needs to be told to use its speakers again.

I Had this problem. I used a compressed air can that is typically used to blow the dust off your computer keyboard. Placed the long plastic nozzle in the hole for the ear buds, shot compressed air into thejack, and it cleared up the problem. I can only assume there was some dust or dirt that got in there.

I tried all of the previous suggestions and no changes.  Will be heading to the Apple Store to get it checked out.

Thanks! Six years later, the "suck on the earphone jack" thing still works! I tried it because I had tried EVERYTHING else. I had nothing to lose. Seriously, what's up with that Apple? I have never had an issue like this with any of my non Apple devices. This is my first Apple device and the headphone jack stops working? Seriously? I decided to drink the "Apple" kool-aid and that did not impress me at all! Lol!
