Okay, I've tried everything and I can not get this update on my phone. I've tried uninstalling iTunes and Apple Mobile Device and reinstalling them, plugging into different USB ports, redownloading the patch file, and nothing is working. Any help??? This is quite frustrating..

Iam having the same problem. it is very annoying...
Same here, I am getting fed up. I was looking forward to this all day and now it is just stressing me out after my decompression at the gym. Great.
There was another post about this on here, they said to just disconnect the phone from the dock and then plug it back into the dock and try to update it again. This worked for me and my update was successful.
Tried it multiple times, no luck.
This happened on both of my iphones. I had to reboot them several times and start over until the recovery finally worked. The second one took over a dozen attempts.
Everyone should backup their iphones before doing this upgrade. Then try the restore over and over again. It is very frustrating, but eventually will take.

I wanna see if everyone is having the same problem. I plug my iPhone in and begins to install the update but once it gets to the "preparing iPhone for software update" screen thats when I get the 1602 error message. is everyone else getting that as well?
Yeah, thats exactly when it occurs. I've tried at least 15 times now and no luck.
bump
Do a reset with the home button and the quiet button and then perform a "Reset All Settings" the first selection in the "Settings>>General>>Reset" menu.
Once I did this, it alleviated the same error message for me.

Tried the last suggestions to reset. Nothing helps. Can't apply new software. Error 1602!!!!!
Same issue. This is ridiculous. You pay this much for a phone... All my friends and coworkers are showing off their updates, and all I can show them is a screen shot of my error... woohoo for 1602 errors... Let us know if anyone finds a fix!!!
i recieved the same error and couldnt get it to fix so i just went to the nearest apple store and had one of the techs try and fix it. they pluged it into one of the macbook pros they had behind the counter and dl the update and synced my phone and it worked. got it home pluged it into my HP and synced it up and got all my backups back and works fine now.
I've got a similar problem only mine says unknown error (2001). During the initial installation of this months update a USB cord plugging in the iTunes icon showed up on the screen. It stayed there for about 2 minutes and then the iPhone rebooted. It repeated this cycle more times then I can count. I'm happy to say that it is now working. But non the less I've been pretty frustrated with the iPhone and Leopard sometimes.
In response to a comment that it seems that every iTunes related software update seems buggy I would have to say that I agree. I've been using Macs since 1987 and I have to say that in past 3-4 years Apple has changed a lot. It's more popular then ever before. It's products are even more stylish and innovative then ever before. But the rising demand for Macs has forced Apple to cut corners it seems. In some ways Apple products aren't what they used to be.

After having the 1602 error message I took my phone to the Apple store and they let me download the new update from their PC. This worked fine and 1.1.3 is now fully installed. My only concern now is whether I will have the same problems with the next update.
i had the same problem as well... all i did was update my version of iTunes to 7.6. When i plugged in my iPhone, it recognized it, i clicked "restore" and it worked fine... haven't had any problems...
