Alternative to Mighty Mouse?

I hope this is the correct section....

Well, I have had my iMac since October last year and I am currently on my 4th!!! Mighty Mouse, due to the scroll wheel not working correctly. I understand this is a common fault, and I have tried various things on all 4 of them to work properly, and all they have done is allow me to scroll up, but not down.

I am fed up with this now, so I was just wondering what would be a good alternative to this mouse? Ideally I am looking for a bluetooth mouse, but don't want to be spending huge amounts of money

Thanks

iMac 20" 2.4ghz, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

I wish Apple would make a bluetooth version of the Macbook Air multi-touch trackpad so that I could use it with my iMac. I've looked for an alternative bluetooth mouse for my iMac, but what I've found is that most of those on the market are small notebook mice, and I haven't found any that would actually look good and fit in with the rest of the computer. Sony makes a cool looking white bluetooth mouse, but unfortunately, it's for PC's only.

I used a Logitech trackball with my G5 iMac and it worked perfectly. I would expect their mice to work as well. I'm using the Mighty Mouse with my aluminum iMac because I like the programmable features, but if it ever misbehaves as some others have reported I'll probably replace it with another Logitech trackball.

Thanks for that

I've done that plenty of times Steve, as like I said in my original post this is now my 4th MM, and have tried to clean it in that way since my first one. It always allows me to scroll up, but will not scroll down

I seem to be the only person though that when I clean it, it doesn't seem to resolve it as everyone else who seems to do it, it seems to work for them all the time

It seems a lot of people are having problems with the Mighty Mouse's scroll ball. I actually thought I was done for after just a few weeks of using my first (wired) one. But here I am years later with my wireless variant, beeing perfectly happy with it (in case you don't know, the wireless Mighty Mouse is a much better option due to it's laser based tracking system). In my experience, getting rid of fluff that interferes with the ball is quite easy on both types. Try blowing really hard directly at the trackball (optionally while you press it down with some pointed device) a few times. Rotate it and repeat as needed. Alternatively roll the mouse upside down on the microfiber cloth that probably came with your Mac.

I've had the MM and the BT MM for so long that I thought it was the norm... for xmas my wife's parents bought me the Microsoft 8000 BT. I laughed and laughed cause, I'm a mac guy! I don't want anything MS on my desk.

Till I used it. Wow. The difference is night and day. The tracking is far more precise, the movement is smoother and controlled. The MM is truly the worst mouse on the planet, by FAR. I ended up trying another mouse, the Logitech - it also was very nice, not as great as the MS 8000, but very very good. WORLDS better than the MM.

I sold my MM on eBay and I'll never buy another one.

You are certainly not the only one! I loved the MM when it worked, but the scroll ball just does not last, and there's no way to open the thing to clean it properly. The whole rub the ball really fast on your pants leg and/or mousepad thing is NOT a proper, effective cleaning. I've on my 4th MM now. Every one had the same problem. It would work great for a while, then scrolling would die, cleaning it the best I can externally would fix it, etc etc, until cleaning no longer fixed it, and the scroll ball was permanently uselesss. This one I can't take back, as I've waited way too long, but I don't care anymore, as I've officially given up on it. Now I just have to figure out what other mouse to get.
