iPod Lost and Found

I'm posting here because I'm not quite sure if there is a better place.

Basically I found a very nice iPod yesterday afternoon while out on my lunchtime walk and I'm trying to return it to the owner. I'm posting some signs around the area where I found it, but there are so many companies around here, I fear even that won't succeed.

I was just wondering if there is any way for someone from iTunes or Apple to send the original owner an e-mail if I pass over the serial number. It might be easier that way.

The simple way is send the iPod to the nearest Police station, and let them deal with it.

Yes, hand it in to the police but get a receipt for it.It may have been reported lost.
English law allows you to claim it for yourself after, I think 6 weeks else it goes to auction for charities.This might not be so outside Great Britain.

Call Apple 1-800-263-3394 in Canada.
Talk to support.Explain you found it and give then the serial number of the iPod.
They will contact the last registered owner and give them your contact information.

Apple will not give you any info except let you know if it was registered.

Thanks all for the replies...the search to find the owner began in earnest yesterday. Still no replies to a bunch of flyers I left around.

I must say that I thought that the suggestion of leaving it at the police station struck me as extremely odd. I guess customs are different everywhere, but in Montreal, you would never go to a police station to recover a lost object. Maybe, if you knew it was stolen, but otherwise? This isn`t likely to yield a result unless the police actively attempted to find the owner....and quite honestly, I can`t see them doing that here. Too busy handing out traffic tickets to generate the big bucks.

Will call the Apple phone number. That sounds good.

I`d be totally devastated if I lost my own pod, so its the least I can do.

Yeah I lost my iPod iTouch in Montreal on February 4th around 8:30 AM after cleaning the snow off my car on Clark near Fairmount.

Someone must have been very happy to find such a cool gizmo. I just got it setup to wirelessly transfer files to/from Linux and didn't get to use it that much since I just received it for Xmas.

It would be super nice if it were returned. In the Safari browser I had bookmarks for my Hotmail account. Send an email and get a reward.

I talked to apple and they said they would be able to contact the registered owner, if given the Serial number.

go to http://itrack.omnillc.com Lost and Found Registry. Search there and record the iPod if no owner is found. It's a free public service website specifically targeted for Aplle iPhones and iPods.
