SMPTE

I've generated a SMPTE-code with my Motu Ultralite-software and recorded it to an external tape-machine. When I play it the sound reaches the soundcard at channel 8 (as I have defined in the Motu software) but I don't know how to tell Logic where to find it. In other words, Logic can't seem to find the sync/SMPTE-code. Anyone know how to solve this?

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Check the Scyn preferences of your project (Project prefs->Sync). Synchronization should be set to Auto (tick the little box underneath the Sync settings) so Logic should detect any incoming SMPTE/MTC Timecode and play when you enter the correct offset.

Master Sync Machine must be the slower one
so Logic must be set as Slave and the Tape Recorder will be the Master!

Hi,

Logic does not directly see SMPTE.

Logic needs a SMPTE to MTC converter in order for Logic to "see" the synch signal.

I use a Unitor8mkii, which does the conversion to MTC from SMPTE, and then feeds it to Logic.

You can try a Motu MTP/AV to do this. The Ultralite can't do it...

Are you sure Logic can sync directly from a SMPTE audio signal, I've always converted it to MTC.

I used to do this a lot in earlier versions of Logic syncing via SMPTE recorded to one track of a VHS (before we had quicktime movies). Unless L8 has changed in this respect I'm very sure.

Is it possible to sync Logic with a Digi 002 with SMPTE, or is the same thing as with my Motu Ultralite...that I have to buy a converter?

You're right Noeq - I was wrong - Logic only reads MTC so my old Midi Interface must have transformed that into MTC. I just read the manual about this again, so sorry for being "sure" 🙂

Hi Jonteman,

You need to get a synch box that will translate SMPTE into MTC.

Unitor8mkii is good, if you can find one.

Motu makes great ones, like the MTP/AV one.

I still have my old Cooper Electronics PPS-1, it's just a sync box only.
MIDI In/Out 1/4" SMPTE In/Out

It's so old it supported FSK as well.
Anyone remember that?
