Q: Macbook Airport Drops Connection

Ever since I upgraded my Macbook Intel Core 2 Duo to Leopard (10.5.1) my airport drops the connection ever couple of minutes. This is really bugging me out. None of the other computer in my house are affected by this, both PC's and Macs. I have a Linksys N Router that is connected to a Older Linksys Access Point. If any body can help me find the cause or the solution that would be extremely helpful. Thanks

Macbook Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.1), 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

I sent Apple an email in the Online Support Feedback page. It does state that it is for feedback on the support page and not for technical support, so I fear it may have fallen on deaf ears. hopefully not. anyhow here it is:

There are LOTS of people experiencing their internet connection on thier mabooks and macbook pros, both older and newer, dropping out. Me, and the numerous people who have posted comments, would appreciate some help from apple. Particularly since lots of us are covered under AppleCare. Can we have some CARE from Apple. Here is a link to the discussion thread:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1345209&start=0&tstart=0

I think you'll find its happening to lots of people all over the world and that there doesn't seem to be one obvious problem and solution.

please help us figure this out!

    Nice

Im sure they are working on this... but.. why so many times?... they should came with a real and final solution... I know they are doing a good job.. but they are only releasing temporary solutions leading to failure in the near future (they fix it, and fails again.. fix it, and fails again)..

lets see what they come up with this time

    All,
I had this issue as well and it drive me crazy! I bought a refurbed Intel Core Duo 2 Macbook. The issue was hard to replicate but seemed to cure itself every time I went to see the Genius Bar. I tried installing a new profile and then manually re-installing the OS. Nothing worked for an extended period of time. (I ran both solutions with the help of the Apple phone center with both fixes documented). Finally after both didn't work, I took the computer in to the Genius Bar and they took a look at the system log and saw the computer dropping the signal as well as the call log with the phone guys. I finally got them to replace the wireless card and now have no issues with the machine. It took a while and shouldn't have happened but the computer now connects and stays connected w/o any issues.

    Good luck!

I am having the same problem and intend to go to the Genius Bar with a system log from my mac. Are you able to post the snippet from your system log for comparison purposes? I appreciate that there already is one in this thread, but if I could show my local Genius yours compared with mine, it might help him/her to find a solution for me a bit more quickly.

Thanks for the helpful post, I think it will really help a lot of people with this problem (as long as the supply of airport cards doesn't dry up .

One more question, if you don't mind, how long were you without your mac?

    Many Thanks.

I've been having the same problem as others in this thread with my black MacBook (bought Jan 2007). It has generally been reliable on wireless, but of late has got much worse - particularly so since the New Year when I installed 10.5.6 (although I'd experienced similar problems last year).

I live part of my time in the Netherlands in an apartment. Consequently there are lots of wireless access points detected - I've sometimes seen up to 12 so inevitably there is going to be interference. However, in addition to my MacBook I also have a MacMini. The wireless on that seems pretty solid. I've just run some tests "pinging" my router. On the MacBook it is highly dependent on location (apparently) - when I'm sitting on the sofa the pings range from around 1s up to about 45s (and I really do mean seconds - hardly surprising then that the internet seems to crawl). Moving closer to the router it gets better but still has many pings in excess of 5 seconds. It is very variable. Even if I put it in the same spot as the mac mini it still has very variable pings. When I'm using on the desk in the study which is much further from the router with a couple of walls in the way, it becomes generally stable with pings around 1 to 2 ms. Given that nothing else changes when I move the MacBook it is difficult to put it down to anything other than location, but it seems pretty counterintuitive that reception can be so bad in locations where other machines (and my iPod touch work fine).

Like others here, my log files show airport link going up and down and repeated scanning and the like. I've already done most of the trouble shooting of resetting PRAM, safe booting (to cause the caches to be rebuilt), and deleting the preference file. I've no particular desire to do an archive and install although perhaps it will come to that.

I do have AppleCare and could ring them; going to an Apple Store is problematic as there are none in the Netherlands, I think and when I'm in the UK I live quite some distance from the nearest.

I'm reluctant to go down the route of buying an Airport Express or Extreme (although I do have an Express in the UK) when my existing wireless access point works fine with my other kit.

I reordered the services and I am on day two and my connection seems to be staying strong. The only other problem I am having is if I run a Live CD like Ubuntu, my internet connection is flaky(disconnections, will not except WEP password, stores preferred network but will not connect to it, all the same things OS X was doing) but I am not sure if it is caused by the same issue, maybe a firmware thing.

If the computer says it is connected to a network yet is dropping internet connection every couple minutes, it may be related to real player. Check to see if Real Player Downloader is in your login items, delete it, and restart. This worked for me after months of aggravating airport use.

I don't have the RealPlayer downloader so that is ruled out for me.

Well apparently it was just a fluke. My internet again dropped off to nothing last night and I was not even able to see my network till this morning after the computer had been off for several hours.

This is totally ridiculous. My laptop has now turned into a desktop because I can't leave the same room that my router is in.

I've done every fix it suggested and nothing has changed, still a weak signal. I've been a loyal Apple fan for so long but I feel this is a really bad sign. Did everyone at Apple suddenly quit?

This is getting worse... I would expect a rapid fix from apple but no..

Im loosing connection every 4 or 5 minutes, and when I do have connection.. the internet is soooo slow....

and something new.... when i turn on my laptop.. and open safari.. it would say that im not connected even thou it appears to have full signal.....and a weird thing.. is that i open my msn (just open, not connecting) the safari page starts to load.... why?? i dont know.. as soon as the msn application is open webpage starts to load..

so... apple... you have a great reputation.. but what about attending your customers problem?... can you imagine who ridiculous and annoying is to turn off and on the airport every 5 minutes??

hope this thing gets fixed soon

Someone at apple should really post something in this thread...
Something like "we're working on this issue" or whatever..

    Really annoying.

As far as i know this issue is only present with open wifi networks (11bg and 11g-only)
