After QT7.4, AE error-you do not have permissions to open this file (-54)

Immediately after installing the QT 7.4 update, I have been unable to render (anything) in After Effects.
I get an error: After Effects error: opening movie - you do not have permissions to open this file (-54)
(44::53)
I have repaired permissions, downloaded the Full QT 7.4 installer, reinstalled, repaired permissions again and still the same problem. Something has changed in QT that has made AE incompatible.
Apple, please fix or offer some assistance on how to fix.
The AE forums are also beginning to fill with everyone having this same issue after an update to QT 7.4
My work has come to a halt. How do I fix this?
I can't find any info on reverting back to QT 10.3.1

Even after wiping my system (completely) and reloading the basic software from the discs, I cannot open my .TOD files from my JVC camera. Again, it won't allow me to use the files in iMovie either. Am I missing some crucial file maybe?

Also, I'm getting fed up with all the 7.4 nonsense and am thinking about just skipping ahead to Final Cut 4. Would I be able to use my .TODs with that program? I'm at a loss, and I really need to get back to editing.
Please...help! Cheers to all of your advice so far, Boomer!

Hi there,

i've been downgrading from 7.4 and i can render my project again, still i got an issue with the HDV sequences imported in my AE project : they actually don't "play" in my rendered sequence.. They are just still image... I guess it's linked to the DRM thing cause it happens after some time ellapsed (10min ?)
Does anyone know anything about this ?
Did apple release any update for 7.4 ?

Thx for any help

Just wanted to add myself to the list of people having problems, my render also knocks out at exactly 9m59s...

I really don't want to risk something going wrong whilst downgrading, so I'm using the image sequence as a workaround. To say this is frustrating is an understatement. I've never ever experienced such a ridiculous problem, what a waste of my time!

So, by the looks of it this problem has now been known for almost three weeks.... how long does it usually take for Apple to fix a problem like this, anyone know?

I have never heard of them taking this long on something so substantial, but it appears that Apple is more concerned about the consumer money making (of movie rentals) than taking care of the professionals. I think it's about time we all gang up on the support people instead of talking amongst each other. Maybe they don't know the extent of the problem? Either way they better get it fixed quick before people get up in arms!

I don't know if this is an option for everyone, but if you have a copy of Leopard it only takes about 30 minutes to Archive and Install it again. You can then upgrade to QT 7.3.1 and Leopard 10.5.1. Just don't upgrade to QT 7.4.

After using the Pacifist option and having problems with programs crashing, I did a Archive and Install, upgrade to QT 7.3.1 and Leopard 10.5.1 and everything has been working great for a few days now.

OK so I did some phone tag with apple and was finally directed to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/feedback/ in order to post the following message;

"Since the 7.4 update of Quicktime Pro, Adobe After Effects will not render properly. It gives an error message saying that I do not have permission to open this movie. The file is one that I created so there apre no permission issues. This is a drastic problem as after effects is an essential application in my work flow. I am concerned as to when this issue will be resolved! The problem has persisted for three plus weeks! Please get this fixed!
Thank You"

I was on the phone with three different people who all said the same thing, they "have no idea when it will be fixed, so I should report the issue to the feedback people to let them know." As I suggested before, I think if we all take a sec to do this, it will be beneficial to the cause, so please do. Good luck all!

Same problem here.

Frustrating it's taking sooo long for a fix. This is a big deal amplified by the fact there still is no fix after weeks with this very serious issue. I don't understand how this wide spread issue made it past the testing at Apple. Sad.

Here's a link to yet another issue with QuickTime 7.4:

Without warning, upgrading to QuickTime 7.4 from 7.3 knocked out about 14 of my available export codecs – codecs I used every day.

Plus there is the other serious issue where QT 7.4 won't play the video in .mp4 files:

Wow, QT 7.4 has turned out to be a huge mess, how did this make it out of Apple?????

Apple please re evaluate the importance of quality and put it back at the top of your list, it seems to have slipped a lot lately.

Thank you.

After QT7.4, AE error-you do not have permissions to open this file (-54)
