iTunes (7.6) freezes for me every time i try to close the program. It seems to open up and work fine, however when I click the "x" or go to file, then exit, it freezes up and have to open the task manager and end the process. While it is frozen, the task manager shows it using 100% CPU usage. This is fresh, clean install of Windows XP SP2 with all updates installed. This was happening with the latest version just before 7.6 came out. I did a clean install of XP, installed all updates, installed iTunes and it froze, didn't think much of it.. thought it was just a random one time thing, finished installing all my other programs.. then today i update to 7.6 and go to close it and it happens again! I opened and tried to close it several times and it happened every single time. I uninstalled iTunes (removed old database as well), reinstalled iTunes and still froze. This has never happened to me before and am stumped on how to fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sony Vaio,
Windows XP,
Clean XP SP2 install, all updates installed
I was having trouble with iTunes 7.6 freezing when I attempting to close the application. If I disable the Bonjour service everything works fine (apart from obviously the sharing functionality is disabled).
To disable Bonjour, I right clicked on My Computer and selected Manage. Then went to Services and Applications, Services, select "##Id
String1.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC5BB94B879762##" and pressed "Stop". Then right clicked, selected properties and change the Start-up type from "Automatic" to "Disabled".
I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit as an administrative user, but with UAC enabled.
Yes, same freezing problem here. Wish Apple would spend more time getting it right instead of issuing a new iTunes release every other day.
The clearly happened as a result of the update to v7.6, as my other computers here that are not updated continue to work fine. It is just on this one after updating.
Thanks to martinwoodward, below for his fix via disabling bonjour-it works fine now. Maybe Apple should have kept Bonjour embedded in the Quicktime software where it didn't cause problems.
That worked for me... I was having the same freezing when exiting iTunes after updating to the latest and greatest.
I did a quick test and also found that if I disabled sharing within iTunes it wouldn't freeze even if Bonjour was running. Not sure what else might use Bonjour on this machine, so I figured this was a better option for now.
you're right.. i disabled sharing in iTunes (had to kill mdnsresponder.exe process first) and i no longer get the freezing problem when i try to close it down.
Hi,
I've got the same freezing problem when I close Itunes.
I have followed your instructions, got as far as Services, but I can't see select "##Id
String1.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC5BB94B879762##"
Is it in the services list, as its not in my list.
HELP please.
Many thanks
Henry Moss
Don't worry about this fix for the moment - try disabling sharing. Edit - Preferences - choose the Sharing tab - uncheck the "Look for shared libraries" and "Share my library" boxes.
interconnect has fixed his problem with iTunes hanging when trying to quit. He had Eset's Nod32 antivirus installed on the PC, and was able to fix the problem by using the measures from the following Eset troubleshooting document:
Where is the mdnsresponder.exe file and when you say kill it-do you mean delete it?. I am blind but know my way around a computer quite well. If you can please email me the info cuz I am tired of having to end program every freakin time I want to close iTunes. Thank you.
