Will a 512MB PC133 chip work in a Beige G3?

Your G3 uses PC66 (66MHZ) SDRAM. The PC133 RAM will not work. On Macs that initially used PC100 RAM, a PC133 RAM module would work, but only at 100MHz.

The speed is probably not a problem, but the density can be. I've been using 128 MB modules PC133 RAM without problems. Only up to 256 MB modules (with 16 chips) are allowed. In best case half or a quarter can be recognized.

With 16 chips, you will have 8 per side. Thus, single sided chip sets are out for 256 meg.

Kind of too bad there's no software/XPF-like thing to trick the beige into using 512MB, even if it was some sort of inefficient bank-switching or something like that. Like maybe giving the drives DMA to the other bank, or using it as another drive to store your image on when you edit w/photoshop. I dunno. -shrugs-

The 128GB storage limit can be fixed with software alone, apparently, so it seems maybe possible a workaround would have worked here, too. Too bad no one ever did it =|
