Accidentally deleted domain files trying to create a second site...

This is my first post so please be merciful 🙂

I used the freeware iWebsites (that some of you know) and I was attempting to create another website with a different domain name for our church. I accidentally deleted the domain files BUT not before I published a backup to my desktop.

Now when you type the address:
http://web.mac.com/elementpicturesmaui/

You get the template for the church site:
http://web.mac.com/elementpicturesmaui/iWeb/New%20Site/Welcome.html

But this is the one I want to keep for my business:
http://web.mac.com/elementpicturesmaui/iWeb/Site/Welcome.html

So how do:

1. I get the first address to go back to my third address.
2. Create a new web.mac.com address for my church
3. I guess also to delete that second address?

Thank you very much for taking the time to help.

First let me tell you buddy you aren't the first person to run into this same problem. I also have my own business and also webmaster my churches website. I just got my first mac about 6 months ago and create both a new business and church website. What I didn't know was that when I tried to publish it published them both to my .MAC account. I also downloaded the program iWebsites. I used it for a while with great success... until recently. I was having the problem where iWebsites wouldn't change the default website and I couldn't get to my Domain file for my personal/business website. I learned that the easiest way to switch from one Domain file to another is by manually changing the name in the iWeb applications support folder in your library. If you deleted or lost your domain to one of the websites and you do not have time machine to go back the you will have to remake the website. How I normally do it is this. if i want to work on my website i go into iWeb Application Support folder and I find which domain file is my personal one. (I do this by right clicking or special clicking and clicking show package contents.) Once you figure out which is the Domain file you want to work with name is Domains.sites and name the other Domain file something else. Then double click the file you named Domain.sites. If I am not explaining it well enough or if someone wants to correct places where I have said the wrong thing please do so. And feel free to add me to ichat. shelbyryan@mac.com
I would love to help you out in anyway.

God Bless

So how do:

1. I get the first address to go back to my third address.

Modify the index.html file on the .Mac server. First, navigate to your iDisk files using the Go menu in Finder, and drag the index.html file to your desktop so that it is copied there.

Go/iDisk/MyiDisk/Web/Sites/index.html

Make a folder and place this copy inside for safekeeping. If anything goes wrong you can put it back on the iDisk.

Launch your Text Edit.app, and under preferences, in Text Edit, check the box for Ignore rich text commands in HTML files.

User uploaded file

Now choose File/Open/iDisk/Web/Sites/index.html. You should see this (or something very close to it) in a Text Edit window:

User uploaded file

You will change it to this:

User uploaded file

Note that not very much changed here...just the name of the site in the url. Your old site is simply named, Site, in your iWeb application. You are just changing the index.html file to point to that site versus the New Site. So really, all you will do here is delete the word New in the index.html file. Now, File/Save. Not Save As...; just File/Save. Now your short .Mac url (web.mac.com/elementpicturesmaui/) should point to the correct site.

2. Create a new web.mac.com address for my church

You will need to buy a Domain name and forward it to your web.mac.com address; you could also use the .Mac hosting via a cname alias if you want. Purchase your Domain name from a registrar like Yahoo or GoDaddy.

3. I guess also to delete that second address?

You can delete these files from your iDisk by simply dragging them to the trash.

Hey Mark,

I tried replacing that text minus the "New" site, and the site is gone now...

I opened my iWeb and tried to see where it would publish to, and it still published to:
http://web.mac.com/elementpicturesmaui/iWeb/Element%20Pictures/Welcome.html

So a template now sits there. Any other advice to help?

Thanks for taking the time....

...the site is gone now...

How do you know this? The site cannot just evaporate off the server. Mount the iDisk again and navigate to the files in the iWeb directory:

Go/iDisk/MyiDisk/Web/Sites/YourSite(s)AreHere

If you are receiving a 404 error then just put the backup index.html file back in place on the server until you are able to sort this out.

You should see two sites in the Sites directory on the iDisk, unless you changed the names and republished:

Site
New Site

Mark,

Thanks again for taking the time...

Okay, I got PART of it Working so far....

I changed the index file in:
iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb

and the one in:
iDisk/Web/Sites/

Your script/code (whatever it's called) in the Text Edit had to add iWeb/ before /Site/Welcome:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"><html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><head><title></title><meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url= iWeb/Site/Welcome.html" /></head><body></body></html>

So now it points back to where I want it.

However now WITHIN the iWeb program, my updates no longer show. I've pretty much deleted what I have within the program, published a default template, but it still has my site as if I never touched it.

What now?

Edit: Okay, when I'm in iWeb and updating stuff to the site, and then publish, it asks if I want to visit the site. Well when I do, I get directed to:

* http://web.mac.com/elementpicturesmaui/iWeb/Site/Welcome.html*

Which is what I want IN ADDITION when I type out:

* http://web.mac.com/elementpicturesmaui* In the address bar, it takes me to:

* http://web.mac.com/elementpicturesmaui/iWeb/Site/Welcome.html*

This is what I want so far. But when I click on "Visit" in the bottom left corner of the iWeb program (without publishing), it takes me to:

* http://web.mac.com/elementpicturesmaui/iWeb/Element%20Pictures/Welcome.html*
