just got logic studio, need some help!

hello, first time caller, love the show.
i've just bought logic studio which is great, and am using a newly acquired iomega 500 gb external drive to save all the audio etc. logic seems to be working fine except however when i am ready to start recording, when it seems to crash, the spinning rainbow wheel thing comes up and won't go, then i have to force quit logic AND relaunch the finder for some strange reason. i did forget to format the hard drive to max os x from fat32, could that be the problem? or something else? help! i'm haemorrhaging creativity here!

imac 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, Mac OS X (10.4.11), used primarily for music recording

Yes. Backup your drive first, and reformat using Apple's Disk Utility to Mac OSX Extended, journaling off. Then restore your data back on the drive.

There have been a lot of similar messages here - I guess users are buying external drives from a local office or computer store, and just plugging them in without checking the drive's format first.
