Removal of Favicons?

What is the preferred method of removing the Favicons from Bookmarks, other than using the app SafariSpeed?

Hi

Adding my voice to the chorus. 🙂

In Safari Leopard, the Favicons reside in ~/Library/Safari. The file is WebpageIcons.db. This data base file can be locked to prevent the favicons from loading. First, via the Finder, go to the Safari folder and trash the existing file. Next, restart, then quit Safari. A new favicon database file ought to have been created (haven't tried this so please check. If one isn't created, restart Safari and enter Yahoo.com in the address window. Then Quit Safari).

Now go to the Safari folder and single-click on the WebpageIcons.db file, then Command/I keys to open the Info panel. There, change the permissions for your Admin Account to read only. Then, check the "locked" box. Close the panel, restart Safari.

One other note, as Klaus pointed out, you can use OnyX to disable the Icons. If you haven't done so, you'll need to install the recently released Leopard version of OnyX. When OnyX is open, go to the Parameters panel>Safari. There, uncheck Bookmark Icons, then quit OnyX and restart Safari.

Hi

well, I'm on Tiger too, 10.4.10 though - & yes, there is a folder 'Icons' in Home/Library/ but it ain't the one used for Safari icons, not here anyway.

However, the icon folder location ca be set in com.apple.safari.plist WebIconDatabaseDirectoryDefaultsKey = "~/Library/Safari/Icons" so maybe different versions of Tiger used different locations ??

Regardless, useful to note that it seems to vary, and can be changed by the user or a 3rd party add-on.
