"Stutter" freeze

I've had this problem for a little while. Lately, my iBook G4 (late 2004 education model) has been "stutter" freezing, for lack of a better name.
It works perfectly fine normally, but after a while (using this as a VERY broad term, it sometimes happens in 5 minutes, sometimes 5 hours), it will freeze up, and "stutter". It repeats the last second or so of sound, but everything freezes. I can't move the mouse, type on the keyboard, or anything. I have to shut it down by holding the Power button for a few seconds, and if I try to turn it back on within a little bit, it will load up until where the blue screen comes up and tells you that it is loading the OS, then freeze. If I go back to it like an hour later, it works just fine. Has anybody had this problem, or know how to help?
In case it matters, it is running Mac OS 10.3.9.
