Method to downgrade iPod software from 1.1 to 1.0.3

Based on problems with 3G iPod nano software v 1.1, the following is a way to get back to v 1.0.3 which will resolve these issues until Apple gets the bug fixed. The following link describes the issues:

To get back to 1.0.3, first go to your User Library > iTunes > iPod and remove the two files labeled as "iPod_26.1.1". I also removed any "previous iTunes Libraries" from my User Documents > Music folder. Then turn off your internet connection to prevent an automatic update to version 1.1. After opening iTunes and connecting the iPod, you can then "Restore", and it will ask if you want the previous version that you have in your library. After restore and sync, you're back in business!!

Chris CA-

I'm certain the Windows users will appreciate your tip on hidden folders.

Fortunately for Mac users, the files are not hidden/invisible, and the update process does not delete previous versions. However, I recommend that the iPod software files be backed up, just in case future updates decide to remove the previous files.

I have just rec'd the replacement nano 3G for the one that died with the 1.1 problem. However when I went in and deleted the 1.1 file, I think I must have also dumped the 1.0.3, so I have 1.0.1. Plugging in the new ipod I got a message about not enough space, and I also saw that the software on the new one is listed as 1.1.
Is there something I have to do differently? Will the 1.0.1 work ok? What about that message re: space?
I need help before proceeding, PLEASE.
Thanks

news4u- Glad the method worked for you.

It's been two months since v 1.1, and we're still waiting. I'm hopeful they will also fix the "other" category bloating with the next software update. Every time I add more photos to my iPhoto album and then sync, the "other" swells and squeezes out precious space on my 8 gig nano (as well as adding lots more size to the iPod Photo Cache folder in my iPhoto Library). I'm scanning and digitizing all my lifetime photo prints, so it won't be long before I'll have to painfully decide between music and photos on the nano.

bad news, Ron, the problem reappeared (still running 1.0.3). When I looked at my ipod calender yesterday, I could literally watch my records disappear while scrolling. When I retured to the calender main menu, all calenders were vanished. How long do we have to wait for a true update. Apple makes fun of Vista an downgrading to XP. Not so funny anymore when you you when look at their own bugs.

news4U- It's possible that a simple iPod reset (without full restore & sync) may fix the issue. Also try the usual repair permissions & restart on the computer. I'm still doing ok with v 1.0.3.

I also have an AppleTV, and they finally fixed many issues with software 2.0.1 on March 28 - problems which had been created by the 2.0 software for the movie rentals. (still some wireless connectivity issues however)

Let's hope the iPod fix is not too far behind.
