Citrix local printing

Does anyone know the cause and the fix for this problem when attempting to print to a local printer using citrix client:

"This file cannot be printed using the selected printer Error number: 196"

This problem arose when I installed Citrix client 7.00.406 on both a machine running OSX 10.3.9 and one running OSX 10.4.3

Hi

Thanks for your response.

I use the only Macs in a windows environment & so answers to these types of queries are hard to find "in house".

We have Citrix on a Windows 2000 network.

The server is configured to allow me to print locally to "client\me#\Mac Printer".

It has worked fine until I upgraded to Citrix Client 7.00.406.

I also have access to my local drive. This still works fine.

I have a powerbook running OSX 10.3.9 (at the office) & an iMac 800 running OSX 10.4.3 (at home accessing the office via the internet).

I get the same error message on each machine.

I have not made any effort to seek a change of the Citrix configuration to permit me to use "client\me#\Mac Printer". Can some change be made there?

What else do you need to know about my configuration?

I appreciate your interest.

Without knowing exactly how things are setup, it's hard to say what is wrong. From the Mac OS X ICA Admin Guide:

To print to your default printer
1. From the client File menu, choose Print Automatically for printing to take
place using your default printer and its settings.
2. Within an ICA session, from the application's File menu, choose Print.
3. In the Print dialog box, select the printer driver most suitable for the print job.
4. Click Print.

To print to any connected printer
1. From the client File menu, choose Print With Dialog in order to select a printer
other than the default. (If the menu bar is not visible in the session window, see
“Showing and Hiding the Menu Bar and Dock” on page 44.)
2. Within an ICA session, from the application's File menu, choose Print.
3. In the Print dialog box, select the printer driver most suitable for the print job.
4. Click OK.
This opens the Macintosh Print dialog box. (In some circumstances you may
see the Macintosh Page Setup dialog box before the Print dialog box opens. If
this happens, check the set up settings, change if necessary, and then click OK
to continue to the Print dialog box.)
5. Select the printer you want to use and click Print.

and

You can also turn printing off for a specific connection file.
To turn printing off for a specific connection file
1. Before you make the connection, open the connection file you want to edit in
the ICA Client Editor.
2. From the Connection Properties tab, select Turn Printer Mapping Off for
this Server.
3. Click Save.

Note In some circumstances, when you connect to the server, the Macintosh
Printer icon is still present even though you turned printer mapping off.
However, if you try to print, you see a Windows error message saying there is a
problem when trying to print and printing is not possible.

So, maybe printer mapping somehow got turned off on your client, or the server is not allowing it.

Thanks for the interest LittleSaint.

I've tried all of the things the admin guide refers to. No use.

We have Presentation Server v2 - bit old but shouldn't be the issue because I could print fine until Citrix client 7.00.406.

I've posted on the Citrix discussion board but no answer there.

This version of the client was supposed to fix all sorts of issues with printing. Not for me however. I'm am looking for a backup of the old client to reinstall it.

One query - do you use client 7.00.406 & can you print locally?

An advance on my recent post.

I found and installed Citrix OSX client 6.30.314 and it works a treat! That is with Tiger 10.4.3 and internet connection. Prints locally & I can have my PDFs agian. I will put it on the work Mac (10.3.9) and expect it to get me going again. Clearly the problem is client version specific.

That will teach me to upgrade willy nilly without keeping the old version.
