Compressor 2.0.1 "error trying to open source media file"

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help me with this issue. I updated my quicktime pro software to version 7.4 yesterday using automatic software update and ever since then I get an error message when I open Compressor 2.0.1. Before I can even import any FCP sequences, I get this message...

"error trying to open source media file"

I've never had this problem before but since this quicktime update, I can't get compressor to work. Is the QT software update the cause of the problem? I've searched the forums for an answer and I can't find one. Can anyone please help!?

Only option left is to do a complete wipe of my hard drive and reinstall everything. I have done the complete uninstall of compression (article #302845), reinstalled compressor but its still wasn't working with Quicktime 7.3.1 Pro, so upgraded to Quicktime 7.4 Pro and still no luck. I then turned off my firewall and it worked, BUT only one time. Now I am getting the same "error trying to open source media file" whenever trying to import a file into Compressor.

I also receive a "Failed: quicktime error -50" in the Batch Monitor's history window when I use compressor from Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 and hit submit.

When I went to empty the trash before reinstalling Compression I was denied with messages stating "qmasterd in use" "AE Core in use" "Swampcore in use", even though these were not being shown in the activity monitor nor were the files found when searched for in Finder.

Hopefully a complete wiping of my HD will solve this. Don't have the time to find out right now.

hey you got 1 step further than i. as soon as i open compressor that error message comes up so i can't even import a file. i've tried importing my FCP sequences directly to compressor from FCP and the same error message appears. i've tried searching everywhere I can think of, and noone has an answer to this issue. there isn't even a topic that is remotely close to this problem. i can find a million answers for the infamous "unable to connect to background process", but nothing on this! I know we can't be the only 1s with this problem. I really don't want to wipe out my HD and reinstall everything.....that would be my very last resort. I just hope someone can help the both of us figure this issue out real soon!

I'm getting the same message. It just started today. I've used Compressor many times before and now this error is suddenly popping up. I've tried several different videos to import and it gives me the same message on each of them as well as when I close the program. Can someone please help us...I have to get a video compressed to send to a client TODAY.

It seems QT 7.4 messes loads of A/V apps up - the solution is to revert to 7.3 using an alternative installer called Pacifist.
See this other thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1342677&start=30&tstart=0
Get Pacifist at: http://www.charlessoft.com/
and the QT 7.3.1 download at: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

Open the 7.3.1 package with Pacifist and after its done all its checking and extracting it will ask if you want to Replace the existing application - answer Yes.
It retained my Pro pro apps auto registration.

Sorry to squeeze in here, but I get the other error message: Unable to connect to background process
I never had that in 10.4, but in 10.5.1 I do. Compressor2.0.1; opens, import files, and can save settings, but going from FCP5.0.4 sequence to Compressor2.0.1 does not open at all. All other options using Quick Time work.

I even wiped and installed Tiger 10.4.11, and everything worked. Upgraded to 10.5.1, no love, same error. I did what the article says, wipe compressor and qmaster, and did the long version. still no love.
I even used Pacifist for installing Final Cut Studio 1.

I will try the install of QT7.3, then report back...
