Help! Software Update Has Corrupted Audio MIDI Setup

I've just downloaded the software updates for Java Security and Security as prompted by the Software Update window. This, in effect, has caused a problem with the Audio MIDI Setup.

When opening Garageband, the message "Timeout or Timer inactive! Check other applications using Timer or MIDI (Code 0). After exiting a number of these prompts, Garageband finally opens with an additonal window displaying the message "Warning: Mac OS X MIDI Services not available". Clicking OK to remove the window, I then had to force quit Garageband as I could not quit in the normal fashion.

I have a M-Audio Firewire 410 Audio/MIDI interface, which was connected at the time of Software Updates. When looking into the Audio MIDI Setup, icons representing MIDI devices was replaced by "No MIDI Setup".

I have had this happen before where I have clicked for Software Updates only to encounter the same problem with Audio/MIDI interface. Apple Tech Support advised to action a re-install of the operating system.

Do I have to go through re-install process again to rectify the Audio MIDI Setup problem, or is there another way to resolve this issue?

I have been having the similar issue with the Audio Set MIDI Devices crashing. If the MIDI set manages to open (which is rare), once I try to change something it crashes. This problem started when I installed QT7. I am having this problem only on my G4 Powerbook running 10.3.9

I am using Pro Tools M powered, Reason Adapted, Reaktor 5, and M-Audio 1814 Firewire. This issue seems to be affecting all these applications and audio playback with popping and high pitched noises, as well as no MIDI functionality.

I keep reporting crashes and hoping for an unistaller for QT7.03 so I can work my way back to QT6.5.2 Digidesign says that there is a problem with QT 7 and Pro Tools and recommends going back to 6.5.2

I don't want to have to re install the OS either.

I have the same problem with all my midi/audio applications (cubase se, reason, garage band, etc).Same error message and nothing appears in the Midi Setup of Audio Midi Steup app ! My soud card is M-audio FW 410.
All of this since QT 7 is installed. Is there a patch ? Where is the IAC midi driver ? Is Apple reading this message?
HELP !

I am having the same issue as everyone else it seems. Using a MOTU 828 MK2, Logic Express, Oxygen 8 w/ the latest drivers and 10.3.9. Has anyone gotten to a point where they can use the MIDI setup again? I really do not want to reinstall the OS.

this is a long standing problem with apples software update screwing up the audio-midi setup.

the problem: conflict with the m-audio firewire driver.

solution:
1. open the m-audio firewire driver installer. if you dont have it you can download it from the m-audio site.

2. the installer has an uninstall option within it. choose this and uninstall the driver.

3. restart

4. run the installer again, but this time install the driver.

5. restart.

problem solved. i've had to do this 2-3 times in the past because apples sotware update ALWAYS screws up the driver.
