Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

    Configuration with WIFI connection drops:

Apple product: MBP 2010 - 15inch - default configuration (shop)

OS version tested: Snow Leopard 10.6.X

Router: DIR-655 (include link to product information if you can find it)

    Succesful configuration:

Apple product: MBP 2010 - 15inch - default configuration (shop)

OS version tested: Snow Leopard 10.6.X (Since I can get a stable connection for a couple of days-weeks before it drops off again) (Not important here, but WiFi works with iPhone iOS 4.X, Windows Vista and XP, Sony XMB (PS3), Ubuntu, Android and so forth.)

Router: DIR-655 (include link to product information if you can find it)

Apple product: MBP 2009 - 15inch - default configuration (shop)

OS version tested: Leopard 10.5.X and Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Router: DIR-655 (include link to product information if you can find it)

Apple product: MBP 2010 - 15inch - default configuration (shop)

OS version tested: Snow Leopard 10.6.X

Router: WGT624 (include link to product information if you can find it)

Apple product: MBP 2010 - 15inch - default configuration (shop)

OS version tested: Snow Leopard 10.6.X

Router: WNR3500L (include link to product information if you can find it)

Apple product: MBP 2010 - 15inch - default configuration (shop)

OS version tested: Snow Leopard 10.6.X

Router: DIR-301 (include link to product information if you can find it)

And adding to the list of succesfull configurations are:

    - My workplace where I have no idea what the configuration is

    - My co-workers WLAN through Time Capsule

    - And up to this point, every hotel I have stayed at since my re-install of the OS last spring

The only problem I have experienced after erradicating a stupid install which left lingering files disturbing the network access are at home.

    Best regards

    Thanks. I opened a new discussion; https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3254924

solely to put in this information. Hopefully it will have any effect.

Yesterday I fully tested my MBP with the Aiport Express, no issues at all. The connection between my MBP and router was excellent the whole night..

I've been following this for a while and I've tried everything to get my new MBP to stay connected at work where they have cisco routers. I have no problem at home where I have an Airport Extreme.

I'll spare all the details but the bottom line is (for now at least) you just have to get a router that works. An Apple Router is the best choice, but I also have a Linksys E1000 at home (yes, it's owned by cisco. I don't know what the deal is but it works well) that works well too.

I'm sure there are other routers out there that work well too, but your best bet is to just go buy an airport express or airport extreme or a Linksys E1000 if you want to save money. If there is still a problem just take it back, but I'd love to know if there is.

There's just too many variables going on that can contribute to wireless connectivity issues that it's next to impossible to track down exactly what is causing it. For anyone (like me) who is having issues at work with a router tha you have no control over, you are probably stuck until Apple releases a fix.

I just found this netgear forum that relates to the DGN1000 router.  See http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=56607&page=4

A long forum like this one, users complaining of wireless dropping out across various computing operating systems. I just made the following response...

This issue has been rumbling on for some time. I bought the DGN1000 last year and it ran faultlessly UNTIL I added a new computer into the network. Then the wireless connection started dropping as per everyone else's symptoms and has not recovered. Initially I blamed Apple (its a macbook pro (MBP)) and lo and behold there is a huge thread on the subject in apple forums (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1352518?start=1050&tstart=0). This apple thread goes back about 3 years with 1000s of posts, much like this one.

I continued to blame my MBP UNTIL I connected it to my girlfriends Netgear router (I'm awaiting model number) and it ran great for about a week without hitch. I'm now guessing that there is an incompatibility between the DGN1000 and the new Mac software/hardware. Whatever the problem, neither mac or netgear seem to be looking at a solution as they are not engaging in discussion forums. So I guess solutions need to be sought by us...

Later today I intend to buy a new router. I'll post results in about a week on whether this fixed the problem.

"Improve the reliability of Wi-Fi connections."

    ____________________________________________________

This is a very telling development.

It amounts to a tacit recognition by Apple that wi-fi connectivity is an issue.

Given what Apple has become over the past few years,

it is about as much as we can expect

(i.e., they will never openly admit a flaw in OSX).

    Still it's a victory.

Let's keep the pressure on until the problem is definitively resolved.

What you need to understand is Wi-Fi issues can be due to any of hundreds of different issues; long time members here may remember this protocol map.

Expecting a fix for all Wi-Fi issues is like wondering why a cure can't be found for the common cold (as the "common cold" is actually an infection caused by any of hundreds of different rhinovirii.)

Your best bet is still to contact Apple and open a case with AppleCare as your particular issue could be due to router firmware issues, interference or any number of other things.

i changed router, Im using D-Link dir-615 now, everything working well, no problems whatsoever.

Its a MacOS 10.7.1 upgrade out now, one of the improvements should be better wi-fi connections according to apple, any improvements anybody?

Now improvements: after upgrade disconnects even more frequently, terrible.

I have TPLink TL-WR941ND router - very good router with latest firmware, don't think it is a router problem.

I am having the same problem with a

    Apple Product MBP 2011 - 13 inch with Lion 10.7.1 and a Netgear WNDR3700.

The router works fine with our iMac, IPad, two (2) Iphones and a Toshiba Laptop.

I've spent several hours on line with Apple Support trying all kinds of changes to the settings without any luck.  I am in agreement I don't think it is a router problem, but it is funny to talk with support and they act like this is an uncommon problem.  I would think after 71 pages they would get a hint.

Out of nowhere my macbook startng working great in my room where it always had trouble connecting after waking up from sleep and the internet would be crazy slow. It was working great then all of a suddden all our other devices couldnt connect to the router (ipod touch,ps3, phones and my dads laptop) yet my macbook pro could connect with no problem it was weird? So we did a modem/router power cycle and the other devices finally started connecting like they should. I turned my macbook off for the first time in awhile and the connection problems came back! Dont know if it because i turned it off or cause of the cycle needless to say I upgragaded to 10.7.1 and the problems have gone away! Hope this helps.

Thank You, saved many hours  for me and other people. Thought same: calling support is not a way out, email is much better. Now do they know about this thread and how many people have this problem?

I too have been having my MacBook drop WiFi connections reliably erratically.  I was so certain that it was my router that I replaced my router twice and still had the problem.  Found that I had the same problem at work too though I usually use wired there.  Tried turning off IP6, rebooting, erasing PROM etc.  Add my voice to the chorus:  There really is a wireless problem with the Mac and it needs to be fixed.
