Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

    Also @ Shinigami

The creating a new location is already obvious and already suggested by another dude earlier on, and it worked for him.

Many people have different setups, so one solution will not solve all of the different problems, that may SEEM to relate to ONE network problem.

N Wireless works very well with my macbook pro 8,1.

Wireless keys, and key timings will create problems if software - drops keys, doesn't save them to memory, or does not restart a request from the wireless device, when the key is suitably old - like when your machine sleeps.

While the update fixed SOME wireless problems it clearly doesn't fix ALL them for EVERYBODY.

Some of the wireless settings are conservative, in order to create capabilities with a large range of other wireless device, but not all devices.

Unless you've a good knowledge of what your driver is doing and what your wireless is doing and can make staged singular trouble-shooting steps, then you'll still be waiting for the solution from the developers.

I managed to fix mine, and some others fixed theirs also.

I'm still massively happy with my mac. It's so nice to a unixy system with a lovely GUI, and excellent international support, and international character mapping, done easily.

    Viel Glück (good luck)

I answered on a couple of these wifi related threads during the last year. I had more or less (at least from the point of the symptomatic side) the same problems with my 2008 macbook and now with my new macbook pro 2011.

While it was dirty solvable with my white macbook from 2008 by using the driver from 10.6.4 - which clearly shows that at least for my old machine it was software related - I have not found any solution for the new 2011 macbook pro.

It is obvious that apples policy about handling (if one could name their behavior handling at all) is absolutely unacceptable. I have the concern that they will not fix anything ... So maybe it is time to start a webpage were we warn potential macbook buyers about that problem and that they should maybe wait till there is a solution for this problem. I am not surer wether one could run into legal problems but as it would be only a description of the symptoms I don't think one would have to fear anything. Maybe this would lead to a strong enough pressure that they finally work on this problem!

If annybody is interested in such a project let me know!

Why?  Apple does have a return policy, so if you purchase an MBP but are unhappy with actual vs. claimed battery life, return it.

    Your solution isn't a solution..

You have 14 days to return it. I didn't notice until after that because I wasn't using wifi that much.

Not to mention we're talking about Wifi not battery, but what i said probably still applies anyway.

    @ Conrad

So how did you fix your problem?

And don't get me wrong. I love my Mac.. I haven't had the wifi issue all day, but I have a feeling it's not fixed.

I finally fixed my problem today!  I'll keep it short but basically the problem is as follow:

you need to buy a router that's capable of 5.0ghz and 2.4ghz 802.11n

    enforce 5.0ghz to 802.11n and 2.4ghz to 802.11g

enforce different password for 5.0 and 2.4 ghz

for me, only MBP is 5.0ghz 802.11n

all my other devices are 2.4ghz 802.11Ndraft2

so I end up forcing all my 5.0ghz to be 802.11n and 2.4ghz to use 802.11g from the router only.

and this is stable for all devices for the first time.

I think the problem a lot of you are having is because MBP uses true 802.11n and a lot of earlier routers are draft 1 or draft 2 802.11n which is NOT guaranteed to work with final 802.11n

Hi guys! I have bought macbook last month and I always had a problem with wi-fi connectivity, but only with dir 615 d-link. At my home I have a pirelli wireless router with a+b+g mixed mode and the mbp doesn't have any problem with connectivity. At my friend's home, in spite of, the mbp has difficulty in connecting, as you described in these posts. Casually I have note that when I'm stay far from the AP, the mbp connects very well, problemless. When I'm stay near the AP the mbp connects to the AP but the quality of transmission is very bad and it's impossible to connect to internet. Moreover I have note that if I turn the pc the connectivity, for a few seconds, looks like fixed. This is so strange, but a plausible cause maybe is the wireless 802.11n multiple antenna... or not. I don't know!

it worked for about a day, then the problem came back. there is definitely something to do with 5.0ghz vs 2.4ghz 802.11n

the problem is probably not the MBP.

finally all working.  2 routers.  one new dedicated router at 5ghz for the mbp, the rest non 5ghz devices uses the 2.4ghz router.  everyone's happy.

My problem seems to be a little different. My wireless bar remains full, but pages stop loading. I turn Airport off, then turn it back on. Network assistance pops up and takes me through the usuall steps. 99% of the time, this works, and every now and then, a box shows up that says that my network configuration has changed. (whatever that means)

Wow! This might be a breakthrough.

We have a wireless modem / router from our cable company which is a b/g/n but only at 2.4GHz.

Since I have only one n-device (my new 2011 15" MBP with all bells and whistles) I have changed the settings from this router to bg instead of bgn. Now it only uses the g network, which is enough for internetting.

I was having similar problems as described here, whenever I opened my MBP, my wifi would not connect, If I then selected the network manually, I had to reenter the passphrase. Simply turning off and on wifi (it is not called airport anymore) would make it automatically connect without entering the passphrase.

I tried several fixes suggested here, but none fixed this issue.

Additionally, when I was sitting in the sofa, 8m away from the router, the speed of the connection dropped. Pinging the router resulted in 30-50% packetloss. Moving just half a meter would solve this. Very annoying!

The fixes suggested earlier might have fixed this speed problem, although I'm not sure, I haven't been sitting in that spot too much lately, but I haven't experienced this problem in the last 2 weeks or so (using the earlier fixes).

Now that I have changed the router settings to not use n anymore, it seems to have solved my connection problems too. I'm still cautious, since it has only been one day, but I hope this will solve the problem permanently.

Been there, done that! This solution has been suggested many times before and have worked for a few people, but for the majority of macbook pro owners no set-up solutions help!
