Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

Unfortunately, yesterday I was sitting in that very same spot in the sofa and my speed went down, completely!

Changing my position just a tiny bit already improved this significantly.

It is strange, it seems like putting your hand on the side of the MBP is already enough to block the wifi signal,

while the icon in the top bar remains full.

    That hasn't gone.

But the problem I had with it not connecting to the wifi net automatically is gone.

Why do I sometimes get a note that my network configurations have changed when I turn Airport off then on again? What's changing?

Also, sometimes Devices and HP Setup appear on my menu, sometimes they don't. I have had my connection problem before the Snow Lion upgrade. I was hoping it would be the fix I was looking for. I once deleted an old location and I had a good hour without problems.

I'm having so much trouble with this same issue. My MBP is almost two years old now but the problem has been ongoing. It hasn't been this much of an issue until the past week though. Before it would only cut out on me maybe once or twice a day and a simple "Turn AirPort Off" and then "Turn AirPort On" would fix it. I have, throughout the two years, had lots of trouble with AIM and iChat though. It would disconnect constantly without telling me, yet the actual internet would still work. That's a whole other story though. This problem is driving me NUTS. The internet connection cuts out about once every 5 to 10 minutes these days and it steadily getting worse. I was just about to buy a new router but I really think it's the MBP. We have 3 computers (two non Apple's) set up to the router and they do not have this issue. Also, the fact that I can just turn the AirPort off/on and have that temporarily fix the problem (for 5 minutes) makes me believe it's the MBP because I don't have to touch the router itself. Even if I unplug the router and plug it back in, I still have the same problem. Although, I have noticed if I go elsewhere and connect to someone else's wireless, I don't tend to have this problem. But I have not tested this in the past week when it's been this bad. So I seem to have evidence that the issue is the MBP and also evidence suggesting it is the router. I have no idea what to do, and I'm not up to speed with all the Leopard/Tiger/Rhino/Dinosaur lingo I'm seeing on here.. Does anyone know what I can do? I keep seeing things about 802.11 but I sadly am not a computer genius. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

(It's worth noting that in the amount of time it took me to type this, which is maybe 3 minutes, I went to post and it had cut out on me. UGH.)

Hi, the thunderbolt update was just recommended for me when I searched software updates...I think it's to do with display/data connections - so like I say, not sure why it would help but I'm still all good with wifi. Would have suspected it was a coincidence but someone else said they'd heard similar!

Click on the apple symbol top left of main screen, then select 'software update' - it should find any for you. Not sure if it will fix all the different problems people are having but let me know if it helps!

That's fine, but you'd be better off giving this information to AppleCare.

Ok everyone this worked like a charm for me...

Try this, its a non-cost systems and settings reboot that you should try before buying new equipment etc.

    Hi there!

I tried all the above but maybe my issue is different as nothing worked. My issue is that at home my MBP (from 2010) struggles to detect my router while it detects other routers within my neighbourhood and while my other laptop (HP) detects it. Sometimes it detects my router for a long period and sometimes it stops detecting it. So when it stops detecting I always have to connect my MBP to the router using a LAN cable (which I currently do).

What can I do to fix it permanently?

Hi I've got the same issue. Two MacBook Pros and one MacBook connected wireless to a Belkin N+ Router. Signal strength is full but the airport on the Mac's seems to keep cycling on /off. If I force it off myself then back on it seems to be Ok for a while then same behavious starts. I truned to Macs because they "just work" but I'm losinga bit of faith with these basic connection issues.  Does Apple look at these forums and ever answer directly?
