Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

MBP, Mac OS X (10.4.11), non

I was not losing connection between the MBP and the router because I was showing full signal on the MBP.

Just one small point. If you mean that the Airport icon in menu bar was showing "full signal", then you were being misled. I found that the icon is not a (fully) dynamic indicator, that is, it does not necessarily indicate the current state of the network connection. Check your logs for the "beacon loss event", that will show you when the connection was actually lost.

Okay here's my fix -- I'd done all the earlier fixes for my Macbook Pro and I've had no improvement in Wi-Fi connection; my Wi-Fi is (was) intermittent and when connected, very slow -- losing packets like crazy. Here is my solution for you all to try to turn your slow machines into fast internet rippers! To start, I am not a computer expert. I just finally luckily found the answer after a hundred of wasted hours of research and tech support from Charter cable and Apple. My solution is the wireless router itself. I had done all the prior mentioned adjustments and found no relief. What did it for me is going into my Charter Netgear router and unactivating the IP FLOOD DETECTION. To quote someone much more knowledgable then me, "IP Flood Detection is a type of Denial of Service attack whereby the victim or system is flooded with information, using up all available bandwith thereby preventing legitimate users from access." I had to log onto my WI-Fi router and then use navigate to a special page to find this feature.

If this does fix your problem, feel free to send me a new iPad as a token of your thankfulness.

I have the same problem too. Bought my MacBook Pro and at 1st, it was working fine, but now, I constantly have to reconnect to wifi if it's left untouched for just few minutes. I checked my settings and set standby/sleep mode to 45minutes but it doesnt help. This is my 1st Mac and will be my last.

I don't know if this will work for anyone else but I currently was just fooling around with it my self because I was so annoyed of this situation and I changed some drop down menu in my router settings from 192.168.1.1, it was on auto, and I changed it to 10. I think its channels what you can change it to, anyways I changed it to 10 and its been working for 2 days now. I have a brand new MacBook Pro, 2.2

I glad everyone posted this - I was wondering whether this was a hardware error.  I'm going to call Apple Support tomorrow, I hope that is not a waste of time.

I have about a dozen different devices in my home and the MBP is the only device having a problem.

    what are you running?

If you are running a Appel extreme. unplug the power, plug it back in, there is a tiny buttton in the back. Push this buttton in with a paper clip pr pen tip for about  10 seconds. power it back up, go to applcations, then networks, go to utililities,  airport utilities and follow the prompts and follow the instructionss.

After six months of this problem and being fobbed off, I took my Macbook Pro to the local Apple store and demanded a new computer.  I said if I didn't get one, I would take mine out to the busy road in front of the store, put it on the road and let the cars run over it.  I left with a new computer.

It is exactly the same.  Connecting to WiFi is like a lotto, you don't know if you are going to have a win or not.  So the problem is definitely with the Macbook Pro.

I really regret buying it, and my next one will definitely NOT be Apple.

My Mac Book Pro loses WIFI connection everytime you wake it from sleep mode.  This nonsense if frustrating and apple does not know why.  The apple store techs are clueless and will not change my computer.  The issue only starts occurring if you update the OS and Firmware.  Last night I went to the apple sotre and they reinstalled the operating system and this solved the problem.  I WILL NOT UPDATE ANYMORE because this is a piece of garbage.  APPLE NEEDS TO FIX THIS NONSENSE.  They are cluesless on the phone and trying to speak to an engineer is a mission.  I paid a lot of money for thie macbook and to have these issues is ******* me off.  APPLE PLEASE DO SOMETHING OR ELSE MANY people will go back to Microsoft.

I have fiddled around with this problem for the longest time. Weeks actually - I have tried everything and been to the Apple store 3 times and everyone had a different idea of what is wrong. "No airport card" - yes I have an airport card ----my Computer says I don't have one..."your antenna is loose" No - it's not.  PRAM - re-install - blah blah blah -- Forums are filled with this problem! After days of messing around - I stumbled onto the only thing that works and it only cost me $29.00.

Go to a computer store and buy the ASUS USB-N10 Adapter "Wireless-N"  It's tiny - non-intrusive and it works like a charm.I think you have to cable in your MacBook to the internet to use the install but after that it works perfectly!! It's so tiny you can just leave it in.

Anyways - good luck. I hope this helps.

Go to your router settings, which is "http://192.168.1.1", then go to your wireless settings on that page, in the channel box it will probably say "auto" or "automatic", click on that drop down box, and it will give you a number of things to choose from from auto to manual to 1-10. I changed mine to 10 and its been working ever since, I use to loose internet connection all the time, even when my MacBook Pro use to go to sleep, or every 10 or 15 mins. Try this, it worked for me.If you can't get a internet connection your not going to be able to go to the http://192.168.1.1, so connect your mac to the router with a ehternet cable.
