Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

MBP, Mac OS X (10.4.11), non

    I think I found a solution,...here's what I did

    Open keychain access

    right-click on your wireless

    get info

    access control

    allow all applications

    my wireless doesn't drop anymore

    :-D

lemme know if it works for you too.

    cheers

amandepp: What is your OS and was your wifi only dropping when your mac went to sleep? Do you have to keep on selecting your router and reentering password? (This is not my problem; just straight dropped connection regardless of sleep mode or active use).

My wireless would drop when macbook went to sleep, or even left unused like when watching a movie/youtube etc. I didn't have to re-enter the password, just turn airport off and on to reconnect. Using Key chain access is better but not "perfect" since the connection drops on sleep only now.

    Hope this helps.

Alas, it didn't help at all.  I still lose the wi-fi connection at random on my MacBook Pro.  But thanks for the suggestion, it was surely worth a try.

ah may be the macbook is fooling me.

Since the connection doens't break when left opened, I still think it's a WPA/WPA2 issue, how airport searches for the password etc. I noticed it now that it happens on my Iphone too :-S

Known issue (by Apple). Intermittent on my Early-2011 13" MBP.

Today mine was better, but it was plugged in (not sure if this matters).

On the login screen, I can see it connect and then disconnect when it returns from sleep.

    I'd like to know if it's (a) my D-Link DIR-655 Rev B or (b) my MBP with Lion 10.7.3 or (c) EFI update 2.7.

It does get affected by using power... and on battery it drops more frequently

Works wayyy better with an open connection with no password. only solution?

I do have a Dlink(DSL 2730B) too , I contacted Dlink and they're not sure if there IS a problem. The "best" solution they had was "Could you please change the Basic Rate and Multicast Rate to the default settings"

COuld you try pinging your router/modem when the connection drops and see what happens?

    In terminal type

    PING 127.0.0.1

Mine shows that it cant connect to router also.

    I am losing it.. lol

I have tried this and it had failed. I have only one wireless connection so it's always at the top of the list. An do Zap the PRAM now and then, whenever my "new" macbook seems a little slow.

Any improvements after the last Wi-Fi update from Apple a few days ago?

A lot of these "solutions" are either snake oil or placebo/sugar water.  After speaking with Apple on 2/27/2012, they're still gathering facts for the Macbook Pro.

There is a known issue - all of the zapping PRAM and clearing settings (i.e. removing Wi-Fi password from Keychain Access after deleting the actual network) appear to work for a bit, then the problem returns.  WEP, WPA, or no security did not make a difference for me.

Mine has been stable.  I downgraded my router (D-Link DIR-655 Rev B) to the previous (pre-official IPv6) firmware, and this appears to have helped - a lot.  It could be the IPv6 implementation (over wireless) on routers is messing with Lion 10.7.3 - I don't know.

Again, the MacBook did not have a Wi-Fi update yet. The iMac did.

Does no one else also have a probelm after switching to an ethernet connection?   I thought I would get by without the wifi, but the ethernet also cuts out.

@dhyatt52: I tried that "fix," per applecare phone support. Does not work at all.

I don't think any of us are going to figure it out.  I think Apple sold defective products - period.  They should replace.  A problem this wide-spread is not reasonable, normal, or tolerable.  There is no answer that the end-user is going to find.  It's a hardware problem.

While I'm the first to cry foul, I wouldn't pin this one on hardware.

The issue surfaced for me under 10.7.3 - which was a software/firmware update.  Again, it wasn't noticeable until after the EFI 2.7 update.

And the "problem" isn't much of a problem.  You just have to select the Wi-Fi network.  That takes, what, 1/2 second?
