Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

MBP, Mac OS X (10.4.11), non

Interestingly enough, I have the SAME issue you are having, but only at home.  When I go to school and various coffee shops, I don't seem to have that issue.

I began to wonder if the issue is due to my PS3 and perhaps someone else in the apartment building.  It's getting on my nerves so I have to find a solution to that madness.

type of thing is often due to a router firmware issue.

"Hello, Mr Hotel Manager? Hi, it's me… Yes, your only Mac-using guest. I have a little problem… Yes, that's it, I can't stay connected to your wireless… Well, you know, it's often due to a router firmware issue. So would you be so kind as to troubleshoot your router's firmware… Yes, that's it, and update it too, maybe… Yes, I know all your other guests use PCs and they can connect and stay connected without any problems… Yes, I know I'm the only Mac user and I'm also the only one who has a problem… But, you know, it's not the Mac, it's often due to a router firmware issue, so… Hello?… Hello?… Hello?!!"

You're likely far from the only guest experiencing an issue, and depending on the hotel, management may, in fact, not care, as they've checked the "we provide Wi-Fi" checkbox.

I've mentioned numerous times that Windows-using guests are likely having problems, too.

I bought a Macbook Pro late 2011 version and have the same wifi dropping connections people have described above. I have tried all the suggested solutions to no avail. Sometimes my connection will last an hour before dropping, sometimes it will drop every 2 minutes without fail. If I connect with an ethernet cable there isn't any problem.

Apple, you need to fix this issue ASAP.

Apple sold defective products.  They replaced my MBP after a year of gut-wrenching problems and business losses. I am still angry.

This is a hardware issue.  You will never solve by adjusting your router, trenching and outside wiring, cat-5 inside wiring, new routers, or even Apple router.  You will not solve with new service provider.  You will not solve with any different settings.

The only fix is a new MBP.  The new ones don't have this issue.  Period. Period. Period.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by 'new ones'.  I just bought my Macbook Pro 13" in February 2012.  I am experiencing the intermittent WIFI drop out issue.

However, this does only seem to be happening at home like MattzOnFire indicated. When I connect on campus it does not have this issue.  But I could be imagining things.

Incorrect. Mine is a late 2011 that I just got last month. My last one, which was an early 2009 MBP, had the same problem. Like I said in a previous post, when loading into Windows (Bootcamp), I never had issues. I only had and still have issues under OSX. It's a software problem.

I am not as tech saavy either.  I just know what fixed my problem after a year of enormous suffering:   a new MBP and router from Apple.  No more problems.

Yes, imagine all the people who don't find this site !  This is a huge problem.  Should be publicized:  when it affects Apple's bottom line, that's when action happens.  $$ is the only language big companies speak.

People, try this: buy, download and install Little Snitch. This solved my issue on both my Macbooks.

True. Unfortunately I had to pay 29 Euros on a software to resolve an issue on a $1800 Macbook Pro.

But Little Snich did indeed solve the problem. Thanks Halldor.

I am very happy to hear how other people solved their problems.  I tried everything (and several hundred hour+ calls to Apple and ATT each), I had my interior rewired, my exterior rewired (after trenching), CAT-5, new routers, new settings.  Almost 40 ATT 'techs' came to my home, and 2 ATT supervisors overseeing.  Nothing worked - knocked offline every 20 seconds or so.  ATT spent a fortune trying to fix what was clearly an Apple problem.  Bought an Apple Airport.  Nothing. nothing, nothing.   Called Apple corporate and FINALLY got a new MBP.  Not one more problem.  (Except I am still angry over the year of suffering, and business losses.  I should have tossed the old MBP in trash.  But I kept hoping the fix was right around the corner.  The fix was a new machine.

I truly think the issue with my connection lies with my Sony Playstation 3.  Take now for instance, I don't have a problem.  No dropped connections or anything.  The only time I've noticed a connection issue is while my friends are streaming movies via netflix across my PS3.  It doesn't happen often enough for me to devote time to fixing it.  I just thought I'd share so that if others have multiple devices connecting to the same router, they can test it.

Glad to be of assitance. I absolutely agree that it's annoying to have to fork out extra cash to fix a problem that definitely should not exist, but at least it takes care of it for the time being. Who knows, maybe Mountain Lion will sort this out, let's hope so.

    UPDATING:

I installed Little Snitch as Halldór recommended, and for a few hours it worked well. But...

I'm still having this problem, with less frequency once I installed Little Snitch, but it's not 100%....

    Sad, very sad...

My Apple experience is being very disapointing. Had a problem with an brand new iphone now with my brand new MacBook PRO.
