Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

@laurenmay1 - I mean, it's sad to say, but you only seem to get results when you start talking attorneys, lawyers, damages, responsibility, and whatnot.

    Hi Ffred,

I too was having this issue.

Go to Network Preferences - ADVANCED

    Once there 'CHECK' the...

    Require administrator password to :

 Turn Airport Off and On

    Dear Video Technique Ltd.:

None of this will fix the problem.  You can play with settings all you want, and it might work better for a few hours, or few days.  Then it's back to being knocked off, damaging work product, affecting productivity and causing untold stress.

This is an utterly shameful problem, and we are the unwitting victims.  Apple should have fixed it, OR AT THE VERY LEAST - warned buyers before their purchase.  Disgraceful.  Steve Jobs would roll over ...

This problem has been going on for years so Steve Jobs would have been aware of it. When I took my MacBook Pro to the Apple store to try and rectify the issue they said they hadn't heard of it. I pointed out there were hundreds of complaints online and was told that some people just wanted to complain about something. So I think the official view is that they know about it, but it's more important to protect Apples perfect image than admit a weakness.

I have been suffering from this same problem since buying a 2011 iMac running Snow Leopard.  I have no problems with my 2003 Powerbook G4 12", my HP Laptop, my 2010 iMac running Leopard, my 2006 iMac running Leopard or my playstation 3.  I tried all the suggestions some of which seemed to work for a few days and then the problem always returned. A few months ago I happened to need another account set up on my 2011 iMac and found that switching to the new account the wireless connection was fine even though there was no connection to my normal account.  So it seemed there was something in my normal login that was causing the dropped connection.

Three weeks ago I started running iStumbler and the problem disappeared.  Last week, I had cause to reboot the system and the problem returned.  I then remembered iStumbler - started it up, and problem has gone.

I hope this helps you people out there who have not yet found a solution.

iStumbler is free and can be downloaded from: http://www.istumbler.net/

Please report back if it works for you.

The problem with the Wi-Fi dropping has something to do with your home location/wifi. In my house, my MBP constanly drops the wif, at least once every 30 minutes. The wife's Macbook White, her iPod touch and my iPhone 4 don't have a problem.

I fly for a living and get to see many $hittyhotels. I never have a problem with the WiFi when I'm abroad in a hotel. Last trip I did was almost 3 weeks in Ivory Coast, and not once did my WiFi drop. I got home last tuesday and sure as $hit, 30 minutes after using my MBP at home, I lost the wifi again.

All the claims that we need to upgrade our modems are total crap. All the hotels I stay in, are in Africa and they don't have expensive modems. It has to be something to do with our locals settings.

As for support here in Africa, forget it. I even tried to complain to Apple USA 3 months after I bought the MBP but that resulted into nothing. I always thought Apple was a great product, but their customer service has proofed otherwise. Absolutely useless!!!!!

Anyway, I've tried everything mentioned here in the plus 93 pages, nothing works. She just works great when I'm not on my house network.....

Thanks for the iStumbler, but that also doesn't work. The rate that mi wifi gets dropped is now faster and faster, up to a point it can only hold it for a minute or so. I then reboot my machine and it works again for a hour or so, then slowly it goes down again....Like I said in my other post, it omly does it on my own home network, nowhere else am I having problems with it.

I have this problem too. But only with MacOS Lion. I have my Macbook pro bootcamped with Windows 7. With Windows, no problem with wireless.

Lion, 10.7.3, I am having same issue.  This is my 4th macbook.  I love my mac and all it does for me but this should be a huge embarrasment for Apple.  I normally am directly connected to my router and no problems but lately I have been finding the need to go wireless more and it can get pretty frustrating.

That's an even bigger embarrassment for Apple! It works on Windows 7 but not on Lion......

Had a solution, but Apple wouldn't let me post.  Feel free to reply to me.
