Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

Guys I have found the solution to all issues with wireless connectivity and new macbook series.

At least it 's working fine with me on my macbook unibody running Lion and my new macbook pro running Lion too.

    Open terminal (Applications-Utilities-Terminal)

Wait till you have a signal on the wifi sign .

Once you are connected , just type in the terminal window the following : ping yahoo.com

Minimize the window and you're done! you'll never get disconnected anymore !

Thanks for liking my post if this will work fine with you.

    Cheers!

The only problem is that it's been tried before (check the back posts). May work for some, it certainly doesn't work for all.

Pinging a site to keep your wireless connection alive is joke for a computer that costs 1500-2000K

Adding my two cents to this ridiclulousness. I have a DLink DIR-615 and a 2009 13" MBP. From the very beginning I would loose my wireless connection. My router and MBP are up to date with firmware and SL is also up to date. I tried all sorts of things to no avail. I can say that since last weekend when I got the updates for the mac flashback trojan, my wireless problem has gotten worse. Every five minutes I loose my connection this past week, yet the CP says I have an IP address. I was use to every one or two weeks reboot my Mac and the router, but that does not work. I resorted to using an Ethernet cable connection! I now have a cable wherever I go in the house so I can use this thing!

I know how frustrating this issue can get so here's the fix...

    Delete

    ~Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

It will recreate itself on rebooting and then just fill in your Network Preference details under the Airport Icon.

    Cheers

    I have also delete:

    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

    com.apple.network.identification.plist

    NetworkInterfaces.plist

    preferences.plist

And changed to WEP security of the password.

    Some Progress...?

Changed my Network Preferences from Automatic to Manual and have had no problems since doing that.

I also had an appointment with a Apple Genius at the Apple Store about this problem. Who, after a quick diagnostic check, assertained there was a problem with my Ram and said he would take my Mac Book Pro in 'the back' and try and find out the problem with the wireless. 10 mins later out he came with a solution...

'It needs a new Airport Wirless Card and that will be £66.00. We'll call you when its here and it will ony take a day to fit.'

Strange thing is the card is working all day and has been working all last night since I changed from Automatic to Manual in Network Preferences?

I feel the wireless card is working but not in Automatic. Is the Apple Genius right ? I made sure that if I pay for the card and there is no change then I dont pay for the card.

This whole thing doesn't feel right.

Did you point/direct the "Apple Genius" out to this thread?

Do yourselves a favor, check your wifi connection outside your own home wifi, you'll find that it works fine. It never drops in any hotel I stay in and this is Africa….

Why should I run a ping or disable/delete standard Apple OS settings in order for this thing to work?

And exactly why should you have to pay anything for their mistake in giving you a malfunctioning product?

We have 2 sources of WiFi here and it won't connect to either when it disconnects thats how we know its something in the Mac Airport Card?

Deleted those extra files as suggested by Nils D in previous reply and Automatic seems to be working for the last half hour. Thanks Nils

    Fingers crossed...

Oh by the way its £80 and not £60 as last reported for new Airport Card !!

By the way, what does the self assigned IP address mean with Airp Port. This makes NO SENSE as it a blind alley leading to nowhere. I used the proper IP address for the machine but that does not work either. Seems the OS is setting up a spurious address AP locks into and dies. Any help on this may help out other folks in the same boat as I .

I just had a self-assigned IP address issue with airport extreme today. Applecare was actually able to help me fix it, but only after 2 calls to them and one to my cable company (they tried to blame the cable provider, but connection was fine when plugged in directly to the modem). I hate to say it, but you might give applecare support a shot. I don't know how long my fix will last, but at least I got a day's worth of work out of it.

On a separate note, the support person conceded a Lion issue with internet dropping was known and "being worked on," but that doesn't help those who do not have Lion.

I think everyone should bring in their mbps and demand new ones. I am definitely doing this after my thesis is done!

I'm jumping into this gaggle as well.  15" brand new high end.  Encountered the issues after less than a day of first use with the MacBook Pro.  I was in denial about it at first and have since been attempting "work arounds."  I just deleted the files as suggested above and have yet to see a dropout occur.  Hopefully this is it...

I hope so too for you, but I doubt it. Like many people following this thread I have tried all the software "fixes" I could find  (can hardly call it a fix, but anyway), some worked for a little while, but none have solved the problem for me, and I am not the only one. After being fed up with this issue myself after 6 months of this on a brand new €2000+ MBP, I have decided to just stalk Apple and their service centers until this is taken care of. Up until now they have replaced the wifi card, but this didn't help. Now in the painstaking process of getting them to replace additional hardware or in the extreme case the entire laptop... Of course, the service centers can not find the problem on their routers using their tests, making it even more difficult to get Apple to admit the problem and fix this thing under warranty. I have a long way to go probably...

Ive experienced the original posters problem since buying our MBP last January 2012.

Took it back to Apple Store twice with no solution to problem.

Just spent an hour with Time Warner Cable who provides my internet service.

Because I use TW's Modem/Router they have sole access to tinkering with it.

They changed me from Channel 1 to Channel 11.  This fixed the problem.  I have no idea what they exactly did, but the explanation is that they incresed the strength of the signal.

All I know is now my MBP finally "Just Works".

Maybe this will help some of you?  I hope so, because now my internet connection works very very well.
