Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

MBP, Mac OS X (10.4.11), non

it is a little different but it worked for me

    Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012

    OS 10.8.5

    cd /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/

    mkdir /bak

    mv NetworkInterfaces.plist   /bak

    mv com.apple.airport.preferences.plist /bak

    mv com.apple.smb.server.plist /bak

    mv preferences.plist /bak

    reboot

    works like a charme.

Been there, done every suggestion in this inifinitely long thread.  None of it "sticks".  Still lose WiFi connectivity at random.

This is with a MacBook Pro Retina, 13in, early 2013.  I changed to two (very expensive) AirPort Extremes and it STILL HAPPENS.  It's not the hardware.  This is a software problem.  APPLE FIX THIS!

I just turn WiFi off and back and and it comes back but it stops Time Machine from backing up, stops mail from coming in and so on.  This truly stinks.

Well mine took a turn. It worked just fine for quite, I counted my blessings and felt for those that were still having problems. Then mine started to fail to a point where thinking of it as a doorstop was being nice. Then over the past couple of weeks the WiFi will come on and sometimes work briefly after startup, restart or just on its own. But almost never really works even though is says it's working in the menu bar. But what is going on in the control panel is what's really going on. The two can both say different things, but the control panel rules. NOW it goes out when I try to use it but comes back up the second I plug an Ethernet cable in. And when I remove it within a minute it goes out. Every time I do this it does the same thing. But all the while when the WiFi indicator is on or it says it is, it's only when connected to the Internet via Ethernet.

This is getting weirder and weirder everyday. And I, as probably everyone else here, am thoroughly amazed that this is being from what I see totally ignored by Apple. I have to make budget recommendations (spending major big bucks here) here soon and right now Apple products, that were my mainstay, are not going to be on the list. That is unless they fix all this. Fingers Crossed. Not holding my breath though.

Can anyona help me, how to contact apple directly via email? Because this is truly ridicolous. Given that the wifi at home works perfectly, I am amazed how it doesnt work at my temporary rezidence. I have tried everything. It shows a full wifi bar, but the pages just aren/t loading.

I found what appears to be a fix. I renamed my network with a different password an it seems to fix the problem.

I dunno if I've "solved" this issue for my own personal situation but I followed what a few have recently said (after having tried and failed a bunch of the other solutions) and - *knock on wood* - what appears to be working is having renamed my WiFi network.  I have two Internet connections at home (two separate routers with both 5 and 2.4 WiFi networks).  Renamed one of them and have been connected to it without a dropped connection for several hours.  When I switched to one of the previous WiFi networks, the connection dropped as it was doing previously.  Hope this works although it's messed up to have to reset my WiFi just to fix this ... :\

Uh, yeah, ignore my last post.  That whole thing about renaming my WiFi network didn't work after all.  Same ****.

BUT, on the positive front, I broke down and upgraded to Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and (again, *knock on wood*) this seems to work.  Several hours now without a dropped connection.  For me, at least, it seems that the Mountain Lion 10.8.5 upgrade fixed things.

Cool - I paid $20 USD to get a fix for Apple's problems.   :\   Brutal.  But, we'll see if it lasts ...

My problems all started when I went over to Lion, and since I upgraded to 10.8.5 Ive had it happen every few minutes along with freezing of the machine ...

I downgraded to 10.8.4 freezing has stopped, however the wifi is FBAR'd ...

FInally i reinstalled my old HHD containing 10.7.4 ..

Not a blib since everything is back to being 100% ... Go figure !!!

Apples updates have cost me over £500 in lost time ! cheers Apple !!!

Im now looking for a good replacement PC I came over to apple in 2009 from the darkside due to issues like this and spent £2500 on my mac ... I can buy a pc a 3rd the price, just as fast and yes I may get errors, but at least i know I got what I paid for !!!!

Please go back and look in posts.  There is something that works (thanks to '2dutch').   My MBP has not lost the connection in a long time after doing this -

    Here it is:

Open Finder and navigate to this directory:

    /Library/Preferences/System Configuration

    Delete these files:

    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

    com.apple.network.identification.plist

    com.apple.smb.server.plist

    NetworkInterfaces.plist

    preferences.plist

    Restart machine.

After reading of several people reverting to SL, I rebooted to my SLS partition, after WiFi has been working in ML for a week or so, just to see and no joy. Looks like once you install ML on a machine it takes out the WiFi. Although in SLS it is showing that the WiFi is connected in both the Menu Bar and the Network Panel. That's rare in ML. And recently WiFi will come right back on when I plug in the Ethernet cable. Right now in SLS, it says it's all connected and I am getting an IP address from the router, but no Internet access. This machine that I am posting from hardwire or WiFi or the MBP hardwired, no problem. So the router is fine.

I subscribed to this thread a long time ago and get eMails with every post. So I have seen most all the fixes come through and have tried them all, no joy. After Apple jumping on the iOS7 issues and releasing a fix in severe media reporting quickness, I am amazed that this has not been addressed on a technical or "legal" level yet.

No WiFi in Snow Leopard Server at all. Hardwire, no problem. Back to ML, N network won't connect, it now asks for the PW for the N network even though I was on it for weeks. Yup. I broke it. No connection now. As I booted to SLS I had a quick though that I screwed up and all in the name of research. Plugged the Ethernet cable back in and WiFi in the Menu Bar, not in the Netowrk Panel. Back to square one.

Just tried the fix from the post above and no joy. Matter of fact I now a spining BBoD over the connection error message that will not go away.

    to Guy -

Sorry the 'fix' didn't work - it has for many here.

I completely agree:  I am beyond dumbfounded that Apple has not addressed this.

Go to genius bar to get your machine working properly - some of the people there are extremely helpful, others not so.

Please keep us posted as to your outcome.  I have a feeling that this issue is going to be a problem for Apple - eventually.

Best and good luck - L

And, as least several hundred people have said by now: THIS "fix" DOESN'T WORK FOR EVERYONE. Didn't "take" for me, I still drop wifi every couple of hours. Stop berating people with a fix THAT DOESN'T WORK.

Nothing has worked for me either. I have struggled to pick up a decent wifi connection. Web pages take forever to load. Is there a way we can report this?

A thread this long and all the people that took their machines to Apple Stores, you bet Apple knows. It's just getting them to act and fix it as fast as they did iOS7. Well by now they have severely missed the fast part, but the fixed part would be nice.
