Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

I ran Netcheck and it looked like a bunch of neighbours have added new wireless networks, many of them on "stupid" modem routers which just gank all on one channel. This had spoilt the reception to one of my extremes.

Just used a brute force fix and bought a new extreme to add nearer access point. Upside is I'm also getting uber fast time machine backups

If your network has been up along time, you might want to reboot it and see if it will find a better channel away from the other networks.

    No problems anymore.

When those troubleshooting articles say "reboot your Router" it can feel like a fool's errand. But when the Router re-boots, it scans all the available channels and picks one that is not already busy.

Please, please, please.  All this discussion about routers and channels is a smoke screen to the essential problem.  It happens with the latest and best Apple Airport Extreme, and nothing but Apple products.  It happens with other wifi device vendors.  In any case, the wifi works just fine on iPhones, and iPads, and every other conceivable product from dozens of different vendors.

But the Macbook Pro has a problem.  It might be something in the hardware, it might be something in the software but it is definitely something in the Macbook Pro.  Period.

I have to agree that it is a problem with the MacBook Pro.  My computer still shows that the WIFI is connected after it has dropped.

Although I've tried numerous fixes, that simply can not be a channel problem, router problem or too many neighbors problem.  THAT'S IN THE COMPUTER.

I've talked with and worked with some great people at Apple regarding this problem and they all have different solutions.   However, there appears to not be any recognition on the part of Apple that there is an issue.

If these complaints were caused by ONE problem, even a really diabolical problem, they would have been solved by now.

What does your Option WiFi screen look like?

Of course we have NO WAY of knowing that because NO ONE from Apple has ever said a word on this thread, just let if fester for years.  Except of course to delete posts that are trying to get attention to the problem.

Apple makes no promise to read these forums, and never responds here unless a query goes completely unanswered for days. Readers are other Users like you. There are no standard escalation procedures for the forums.

To get the attention of Apple Inc, you need to do one of these:

    • call AppleCare on the Phone

    • present your MacBook at an appointment at the genius Bar at an Apple Store

    • send your MacBook in for service via an arranged courier-pack

    • if you are a Developer, contact Developer Tech Support

    • If you are on an Educational Institution program, contact Education Support

    • if you work for a National Account, contact National Account Support

But a query can go unanswered for years and that's OK.  I get it.

Sorry, I was not as precise as I intended.

Unless the initial query of the ORIGINAL POSTER goes completely and utterly unaswered for days.

Splitting hairs with me does nothing for you -- I don't work for Apple.

    chefcarolb,

I was having the same problem. The wifi indicator would stay on even though the connection had dropped. If I turned the connection off and then back on, it would not come on again. Only a reboot would temporarily restore it. Another user, Bananmac, figured this one out. In his case and mine, the cable that goes from the Airport card to the motherboard was defective. I got the part number off ifixit.com and bought it on ebay for $13. Problem is fixed for me.

THANK YOU!!!!!  I have an appointment with one of the store managers tomorrow.  However, I am going to take my computer in tonight and hopefully they can get this fixed by tomorrow.  My computer is still under warranty and I paid extra for the additional years of Apple Care so I will certainly let them do it all.

Hi I thank you for your answer. The situation is that I cannot control the router. I get an accesscode and a password in the campsite and the router is placed in a tree 15 meters from my place.

Would it be an idea to buy an airport express and build a network behind the airport express.? Then the signal from the "tree" goes alone to Airport Express and I can connect Iphone, Ipad, Apple tv2 and mac to airport Express. Will I get a better signal?

I visited Apple store in Marbella Spain today and they tested my MBP and it was OK. They changed location and said this would work. Back in the campsite again it was the same. So nothing changed.

I do not understand why I have full power and no problem on Ipad and Iphone and problems with MBP. It is the same compagny.

Best way to sort out wireless problems to determine if its hardware or not

Remove the wifi service in sys prefs

    recreate the service

    create a new location

    clear all your preferred networks

    renew your dhcp lease

add google DNS servers in (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)

also remove the password in keychain access

power cycle the mac and router

if that fails remove m,ove the systemconfiguration folder onto the desktop

    finder>go>computer>mcintoshHD>library>prefs>systemconfiguration

    restart mac

also try in the recovery drive
