Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

I thought this was only showing up for Leopard users as well.

Bodie - I wouldn't let this stop you. I connect to my, and others, wireless network without issue. Of course, if wireless is a critical success factor, it might be wise to see what happens when 10.5.3 comes out.

I made these changes on my MacBook 10.5.2 and its been working without any issues for a few hours today... will report back if this changes.

    1. Changed my WiFi channel from 11 to 6

    2. Go to System Preferences and select Energy and select the setting for Best Performance instead of the default which is Best Battery.

3 hrs and no dropped WiFi. I remember having to make similar changes to my IBM ThinkPad a few years ago to get the WiFi to stay connected.

    Hope this works/helps.

Hope everyone else think of buying a Mac reads this big old thread. This thing is so huge it loads like 1500 items. Must be hard to load with that crappy wireless!!!

Seriously though, my wife has a powerbook G4 and when I got my new gaming router the G4s wireless stopped working. Same issue everyone else says. It works sometimes but not for long periods, the signal is full but simple pages take forever to load if they ever do. What a pain when she is trying to get her work done!!! Good one apple, like when she upgraded to 10.4 it blew one of the ram slots. Look it up it is a confirmed problem that apple will fix but guess what, The ram slot blows again when you upgrade to 10.4 again. Nice work apple. Just like the ram problem apple is doing nothing about this wireless thing.

Any who, to fix it I disabled the n and changed the channel on the router and it seems to have stabilized but who the **** knows with these crappy things if it will last. I will stick with windows where if there is a major problem, it gets fixed and quick!!!!!!

I don't know whether to be relieved that it isn't just me or annoyed that for so many months I had to endure daily frustration of resetting the connection.
Really makes me wonder why I bothered to get a laptop, particularly a top of the range one which was meant to be less bothersome or so I thought.

Well everything was working great for a couple of months since I started hiding the ssid. It would slow down once in awhile, but it was brief and would resolve. Recently, the past week, it has started all over again. I have to click on the Airport radar on the menu for a few seconds and wireless access will go back to normal full speed again.

All the other Mac at home works fine. That is my old iMac G5 2.0 ghz and iMac INTEL 1.8 ghz continue to work fine. It's just this MBP 2.1 ghz that the wireless hangs, that is until you click that little radar icon.

When is Apple going to fix this?

Just got my brand new MBP about a week ago. Thought it was an old router that was the problem, but clearly not b/c my PC still connects fine. So, ditto here . . . Constantly losing connection, especially if idle for a while.

Also, contacted Apple Care, and they were not helpful. The woman I spoke with didn't acknowledge anything and claimed that most wireless issues were due to interference, which doesn't explain why only my new Mac has had these "interference" issues. Here's to wishing for a fix soon.

Same issue here. When I asked the Big A Care about this, was handed the same excuse... interference! I quickly asked, "Then why does it not effect my HP Vista Home Premium laptop and it also does not effect my Apple IPhone on Wi-Fi? No answer and I can only picture a "deer in the headlights look" on the other end of the phone! Wonder how Apple would feel about a parody clip on You Tube where the MS guy says... at least we can keep a Wi-Fi connection... even on Vista! Now that I would like to see someone put on You Tube and make sure Mr. Jobs gets a copy!

Early on I had a Linksys wg54t wi fi router at home. It worked fine with all my computers in the house. We have one mac and three pcs. Then I got the MBP and the connection issues started to surface. Dropping the signal, low band width for me, but not the other pcs in the house. The pcs occupied the main room with the WiFi nearby. MBP was upstairs opposite end of the house.
Apparently it was something to do with having the correct digits for the passwords. A lot of them like eight or more. And using a WEP was best by far. The SSID is hidden also. Now I've got a new Wi Fi, Airport Extreme with hidden SSID and WPA/WPA2 with a 8 character password. So far its been working seamlessly. Those little things with character requirements and picking the right security protocol is fairly universal with all the Wi Fi equipment.
For sure keep it simple and make sure all the WiFi networked machines like the security protocols. Older units will take to WEP over the WPA.

I also use WEp and a 15 character PW. Still the same issue. My Vista Home and iPhone work just fine on the router and repeater (distance is not an issue at this location). It's the software and I hope that Apple reads these posts and figures out that they have an issue with the MBP's or else there is going to be bad press out real soon! No excuse for this. We pay a premium for what is suppose to be premium equipment/OS. Changing my Wi-Fi at home is not a "solution" as what am I suppose to do, tell everyone I try to connect on (in hotels, airports, etc.) to upgrade their systems? Get real!

    Badsky2k,
You are absolutely correct (and, I'm sure the Apple folks are reading these hundreds of posts and thousands of views...unfortunately, they don't appear to have this on the front burner). The URLs below were posted on another thread more than a month ago...it has nothing to do with anyones router or their settings - it is simply the MacBook Pro and Leopard. We've been 'suffering' with this problem for months now and our 'glorious' Apple has yet to acknowledge that there is even a problem. Apparently, it takes the NYC school system to put a hold on Apple orders to get a fix for this...to hxxx with the thousands of single user MBP customers like us. I'm in Europe visiting my daughter and I can't even get a Wi-Fi connection with my MBP. I'm using my daughter's Intel MacBook (which has its own problems - like waking up from a sleep) - my MBP can't even see all of the Wi-Fi connections available in this London apartment complex but her MB does and then the ones that they both can see, the MBP can't make the connection but the MB does. Go figure. 10.5.3 was 'rumored' to be released by last week but no such luck. But, while we are suffering with the problem, Apple is the big loser here. Just read the posts of all of the new Apple users who are really angry with having paid a premium price for a piece of 'also ran' junk. If this were a Kentucky Derby horse, it would have been shot by now.

So far my MBP has been able to deal with different locations. The only problem has been entering the incorrect security format. Although, the new 10.5.2 upgrade has screwed with my SamSung printer.
