Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

MBP, Mac OS X (10.4.11), non

Have MBP 3.1 for about a year.
These problems with airport appeared on my lappie exactly after february(?) update — those called 2008-001.

After reading this topic i have resetted PMU and PRAM and changed my router (LevelOne) to "11g only" — problems are dissapeared for now.

Just wandering why apple officials cannot answer us where is the root of the problem.

    Hi everyone,

In a previous post I mentioned an article in MACNN to fix this problem. I thought I would report back my results. I followed the instructions and after the third attempt I believed I had managed to make it work as it suggested. However the question still remained if it had been successful?

Well at first it did appear to solve the problem then after a few hours it started intermitting again. Only this time when I went to the airport icon and clicked my connection it strengthen the signal back to five bars. As annoying as this was, it was much better than before as connection lasted longer and was quicker to re-establish. Then the latest iTunes 7.7.1, along with Security Update 2008-005 1.0 and iPhone software 2.0.1 then amazingly everything in the world of Mac Book Pro was prefect again.

So I can't say which item was the final solution, or if it was a combination of various corrections from Apple, but the machine has not dropped a signal connection since the end of July.

I hope some of this information might be of use for everyone else. I will keep an eye how it goes and report back if it all goes terribly wrong again.

    Del

Prior to installing Leopard I had a very solid wireless connection that never dropped the signal on my 2 year old MacBook Pro, now, apart from constantly losing connectivity, I find that when I am finally connected, my browser sometimes reports that I am not connected, which is infuriating to say the least.

These faults are making me consider going back to Windows, with all its faults it never had these problems.

Has anyone installed the Mac Pro 802.11n card successfully in a MacBook Pro ?

Two weeks ago I upgraded the AR5BXB6 802.11g card in my first generation MacBook Pro to the BCM94321MC 802.11n card. This is the same card that ships with the latest generation MB Pro.

I was surprised to find that my old 15" 2GHz MB Pro connected with no problems to a 5GHz 802.11n (only) network without installing any other software. It also works well connecting to various 802.11g networks, too.

I have had problems (on my new 17" 2.5GHz MB Pro) with this card in the past, however, and you may need to return yours for a replacement once or twice until you find one that is reliable.

It cost me $90 from ifixit.com, and I feel lucky the first one worked.

Has anyone had experience replacing the 3-antenna AR5BXB72 found on mid-2007 3rd generation MB Pros with the BCM94321MC? Is it compatible? If it is, which 2 of the 3 antennas should NOT be connected, since the BCM94321MC has only 2 connectors.

As far as I know the original MBP Core Duo airport card has two connectors. These can be used for the n-capable airport card as well. Look at the guide on ifixit.

    Me Too.

I have a MBP, one month old and I've been noticing the constant scanning on the airport. It wasn't a problem until a few days ago when the connectivity dropped and was very slow/weak when connected. It was impossible to get any work done.

There is a Powerbook, VAIO, eee-PC, Wii & mobile phones that pick up the wireless fine, but my brand spanking new MBP keeps dipping in and out.

Just adding to the gripe, no one seems to know why and Apple are pretty quiet. Please update/fix/explain/exchange the bug Apple.

Wow. Way too many posts to read but I've read enough. This is ABSOLUTELY a Mac OSX issue. Booting into Windows works great EVERY AND ALL THE TIME. There is a fix.

Don't set your router to B/G/N all in one speeds. Set it to just one of them. I set it to N and the MacBook Pro worked flawlessly. Problem is older PowerBooks won't be able to join the network. So, I set the router to G so everybody in the house could join problem free. That too works flawlessly. So, there you go.

I am going to call Buffalo (the makers of my router) and see if they know a fix for Apple's problem while on B/G/N. They have been helpful before. If I get a real answer, I'll post it here. Till then, set your speed on a single speed mode and you'll move along like you're supposed to.

Has anyone had any luck with a D-Link DIR-655 router using N and an intel MacBook Pro? I have had to disable the wifi on it and use my Airport Express. I have tried everything I can find on Apple Discussions and other boards to no avail.

Has anyone tried using a USB WiFi Adapter? Any recommendations on what to try? Or is the encryption/scanning issue likely going to be the same? Any thoughts appreciated.

Check my post 2 above yours. What worked for me was setting the router on a single speed mode. N, or G but not B/G/N. Been perfect since.

Hm, interesting - I switched my router (D-Link WBR-1310) from WPA to WPA2 and since then wifi has been stable.

"seattle9, if you updated RealPlayer a few weeks ago deleting all of its files should restore your Airport connections. I mention this because your situation sounds like what happened to me."

    ThomasG,
This was the most important hint I got for my MBP airport connection problem, THANK YOU. I had the 'full reception - but no reliable connection' issue. Sometimes I got an IP address sometimes not. Even if i got an IP address I could not securely brows or access the network. All more or less happened over night. The situation was worse whan another win based laptop was also on the net.

So your hint made the connection for me that all issues might have started after the installation of RealPlayer 11 . Now, before I did the complete removal of all realplayer files I only erased the 'realplayer download' entry in the User Startup section and rebooted - and it seems to work now reliably again. There was (so far) no complete removal of RealPlayer necessary...

    Thanks again
    Klaus

My first post. To all those who suggested removing RealPlayer, esp ThomasG who made the first suggestion, thanks - this fixed my connection problems. I run an all Apple Network with a Time Capsule and Airport Extreme. I have a MBP is about 6 months old, no problems until about 2 weeks ago. Problems started when we got a new 3G iPhone and set up to use Wifi at home - the MBP wouldn't hold airport connection for any more than a few seconds sometimes. Only my MBP was misbehaving, a MacBook and old Powerbook G4 were fine, as was a Windows XP notebook. About the same time I had installed RealPlayer. Nothing would resolve the problem UNTIL I uninstalled RealPlayer - no connection problems for 2 days now. If you have RealPlayer try to uninstall it - it has worked for me, and others. Good Luck!

Man, there are a lot of posts here :/

I am having the same issue. I am on my new MMP 2.5Ghz. Everything was working fine up until about a week ago. I can connect sometimes, but usually I dropout within a few minutes. I can sometimes get back on if I reset the cable modem and Airport, but even if I do I dropout again very soon. My wife, who is on an iBook, is on and never has any connectivity issues and my iPod Touch is working just fine. I also have a full signal showing from the wifi icon in the menu bar. I called the cable company yesterday, before I checked in here, and was on for about 2 hours :/ There was no solution on there side other then setting up an appointment, which I did.

I saw the first post in the thread and I did just install RealPlayer 11, but I cannot remember if I had this issue before or only after it was installed. I will remove it and see if that helps, like it did for Davo124 .

Looking forward to a solution, because this really s*cks!

I tossed UnRealPlayer 11, along with all its related files, in the trash and I am happy to report that I have been online all day
