Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

MBP, Mac OS X (10.4.11), non

Since many think 10.5.5 broke their Airport connectivity, I was wondering if 10.5.6 fixes it. ....or must all of us do as Giacecco has and install new cards?

Never mind. I just installed 10.5.6. It had no effect on this issue for me.

I thought 10.5.6 had fixed my wifi, then 30 hours later, back to losing my connection. This post alone has over 20000 views and well over 600 replies. You think Apple would have addressed this by now ? It seems they wont even admit to it. Now what do we do ?

someonee says an Apple genious acknowledges that this is a design flaw. Something with metal casing and antennas.
I'm waiting for a fix from 2006. I even put an n-capable airport card in my CoreDuo MBP hoping to fix these wireless troubles. Still no luck, even with the newest OS and updates.

Design flaw ? That woudldn't explain how it worked fine for several months and then all of a sudden became intermittent. If it had to do with the metal casing it would have been that way when it was new. My way around it is to use my Belkin USB wifi adapter but I don't always want to be hooking that up everywhere I go. I expect the internal wifi to work, YA HEAR ME APPLE ?

After about a year's problem with my MacBook Pro's wireless connection, and after attempting every software solution that was offered by numerous sites, I replaced my airport card with a new one. Believe it or not, the problem is finally solved. I can now use the computer anywhere in the house, I no longer loose my connection, and the transmit rate stays at a healthy and happy 54. Halleluia! What a Christmas present. I wish I had tried it a year ago.

How much does the replacement cost? (i'm not under any warranty) Do you need to send the MBP off for the repair?

    Thanks!

I am suffering this problem with the rest of you on my 2.5 ghz MBP I purchased about 6 months ago. I am disgusted with Apple for not acknowledging this problem, and doing a voluntary recall on this issue.

FOR SHAME APPLE!!!! Get off your backsides and do the right thing!

Fortunately I have Applecare, but it doesn't address the HUGE inconvenience I will undergo in dealing with this issue, as the nearest apple store is 60 miles away.

Replacing my wireless card finally did the trick. I haven't had any problems for a couple weeks now.

If you're having similar problems, I really recommend getting the card replaced before your warranty expires.

Good morning, I believe that I have solved the problem though I am not sure of its cause. After several visits to the Geniuses and phone support I decided to look at the problem from a connectivity issue. That led me to the firewall I change my settings to accept all incoming connections and without having to shut down it connected to internet. I have since shut it down and put it to sleep and it still has and internet connection. I did this on several networks.

    Basically, open up the firewall.

I spoke to an Apple Tech support rep earlier this week because I have Apple Care. I figured that while sending my MBP might be an inconvenience, I might as well get my money's worth from it . The Apple Tech seemed very familiar with the problem. He led me to believe this is a faulty hardware issue, which explains why Apple hasn't developed a "patch" for it yet. I admit I MAY have mis-read him.

So.....I sent mine back to Apple, for repair. Hopefully this nightmare will be over soon.

By the way, to the poster above me, this problem has nothing to to with the Internet. It is a local area network problem, specifically with the client Aiport card. I can't even stay connected to my Airport Extreme for longer than 5 minutes when streaming Airtunes. Airtunes does not require Internet connectivity, hence Internet router settings will make no difference with this specific problem.

Sent it in? Bummer! Giacecco's post above wasn't clear about this. Was having it replaced at an Apple Store NOT an option?

Also, I can confirm that turning off the firewall has no effect on this issue.

It would have been a 120 mile round trip to bring it to the nearest Apple Store.
